nce BRIGHT STAR was complete, we transited the Suez Canal on Saturday, I 8 November taking thirteen hours and covering over 110 miles. On the west bank, the dark shadows of the clouds rolled slowly across the inhospitable dunes and the occasional rust- ing remains of a twisted tank from the Israeli invasion over two decades ago. To the east, villages grew around small clusters of palm trees and sand bags sur- rounded Egyptian gun emplacements. The AMERICA, with the OKLAHOMA CITX BUTTE, AND MUNO- NGAHELA, followed closely behind us filling the nar- row waterway and appeared to be on the trickling re- mains of an ancient ocean. Donkeys, camels, exotic architecture, and monuments to the Egyptian military dotted the landscape and were silent observers to our slow passage through this exotic land. t -'r . ' Ui -0 L
