Providing an excellent photo op- portunity for many crewmembers, tl1e MONTEREY joined the USS AMERICA in the Adriatic Sea fol lowing the exercise with the Turk- ish Navy. We briefly pulled into Au- gusta Bay. Sicily to replace a defec- tive Harpoon Missile and to take on some much needed supplies for our Christmas party. Finally. after 25 days at sea. we arrived in the ship- yards of Ilaifa. Israel on October 17 where we replaced gas turbine en- gine lB. Ilaifa is situated on the rugged inelines of Mt. farmel on the northern coast not far from the Golan Heights and the boarder with Lebanon. The FSO is located at the crest of Mt. Carmel and provides a spectacular view ofthe eitv and har- bor. Many stores. restaurants. ho- tels and clubs are within short walking distance of the FSO. Sever- al tours were available including trips to a diamond factory, the Dead Sea, the Sea of Galilee. the River Jordan. the ancient battlefields of Massada and Jericho. Nazareth. and .IerusaLem. The excursion to Jeru- salem included visits to Bethlehem, the Mount of Olives. the Walling Wall. and the sites of the Last Sup- per and t'hrist's trueiflxlon and llurial. We left llaifa October 24 for a short exercise and returned on October 27 for additional liberty before heading for Alexandria, Egypt. The MON'l'lfRlfY was unex- pectedly underway only hours later for the .Xdriatie following the news that the FSS .X MIZRIFA was sailing for Somalia. Once again the crew- members of MONTEREY were nn- eertain of their next glimpse oflhllfl
