Limelieht In a year where numerous popular culture institutions were brutally kicked off their soaring pedestals by the harsh foot of justice, the entertainment sections of our daily newspapers suddenly transformed into police reports from the previous night. One figurehead that many secretly hoped would fall to a brutal destruction of a gaudy rainbow- colored chiffon disaster was that of domestic goddess Martha Stewart. After Stewart ' s timely sale of her Imclone Systems Inc. shares in December of 2001, investigations immediately began to determine whether Stewart had taken advantage of unlawful insider advice from her stockbroker. First year business economics student Karly Chiu commented, It was kind of exciting to envision someone like Martha Stewart doing road-side cleanup in brightly orange colored prison garments. Eventually, this image may become reality, as she was found guilty of obstructing justice and lying to investigators in early March. Kobe Bryant ' s rape accusation was another contributor to a dismal year for the perceptibly perfect. In the midst of quenching his thirst in Sprite commercials and dribbling for Nike advertisements, the 24-year-old Los Angeles Lakers player, quickly became a pop culture icon, who, in the eyes of the media, could do no wrong. However, Bryant rapidly fell from his elevated pulpit when he was accused of raping a 19-year-old Colorado hotel employee. Bryant, once an exceptional model of morality, became yet another addition to the felonious image attached to the National Basketball Association. While the fall of the visibly perfect made headlines, the idiosyncratic Michael Jackson defending himself against child molestation charges was also a journalistic gem. When first year biochemistry student Rachel Lee first heard the news about Jackson ' s legal troubles, she thought to herself, He ' s done it again? It seems as if he is always doing something odd or disturbing. For the second time, Jackson was accused of sexually assaulting an underage male minor, leaving us to continuously wonder what actually transpires behind the hefty gates of his opulent Neverland ranch. As the rich and famous continuously tripped over their outrageously pricy Manolo Blahnik heels into the headlines of daily gossip columns, the public was left to wonder what these surrealistic figures would do next. Whatever they do, we ' ll be watching, because after all, that ' s entertainment. Whether he did it or not, Kobe Bryant is still the best basketball player in the NBA. .am Bishop 3rd year Psychology
