loyees I AW fe tf h. mi Richard Cowon, United Food ond Commercial Workers Secretory Treasurer speaks out about the strike. The UFCW considered themselves to be a voice for working America as they fought for better healtticare for their members. Photographed by Kama Kormarker, Daily Bruin. Over 70,000 workers of 859 Ralphs, Albertsons, Vons and Pavilions stores in Southern California went on strike against Corporate America in a move that would have made labor rights activist Crystal Lee Sutton ( Norma Rae ) proud indeed. Safeway, Inc. and Kroger Co. were faced with record-low sales and interrupted supply lines as the United Food and Commercial Workers Union stalwartly expressed its opposition to a proposed $1 billion in healthcare cuts. While the strike may have hurt Safeway and Kroger, their competitors have enjoyed profits and a larger share of a market once tenaciously held by the two supermarket titans. Trader Joe ' s has estimated a 30% increase in sales from its 74 stores in California as its employees continue to remain content with their status quo health insurance and pension plans. Second year sociology student Chantae Redeye stated, I am puzzled by the negative-reinforcing mob mentality of the union, which is only hurting itself in the long run. Where do the workers think the losses incurred by the strike will at least partially be recouped from? It seemed the union and store owners had taken a page straight out of the Israeli- Palestinian peace talk playbook - minus the suicide bombers, of course. Multiple sorties at the negotiating tables resulted in more picketing as both sides unwaveringly stood behind their respective offers. At the focal point of the media ' s routine play-by-play analysis were the conflicting figures of the healthcare cuts. The union fought for a cut of $300 - $500 million, an offer which was flatly rejected by the supermarket companies. The union slowly gained more support in the battle of attrition and renegotiation as celebrities and thousands of protestors marched through Los Angeles on December 16th. In true Hollywood fashion, Mellisa Gilber, the President of The Screen Actors Guild, said, The SAG board of directors voted unanimously to support this strike, and our members are on picket lines across [Southern California]. Fourth year cognitive science student Henry Kim commented on the newly acquired support base for the union and its workers when cautiously saying that, Celebrity involvement and media overexposure is blowing this problem way out of proportion. Though true that cuts may have been necessary in the face of a lagging economy and growing competition in an increasingly saturated market, it was also important that employee conditions and customer satisfaction not be blindly sacrificed in the name of the Almighty dollar. 3 3 K5UBB69

- . Super Bowl F J Singer Janet Jackson covers her right breast momentarily otter the show stopping wardrobe malfunction. The spectocle continued to be a subject of debate, lingering among conversations of viewers and nonviewers alike. Photographed by Rhona Wise, EPA. February 1st was a special day for American football enthusiasts. Preceded by a week of endless forecasts by sports pundits and other know-nothings, it became increasingly clear that very little could be assumed in Super Bowl XXXVIII between the Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots. Fans could count on a low-scoring game marked with repeated turnovers, difficult defensive stops and frustrating penalties. The Patriots returned to the Super Bowl after only a year ' s hiatus via a resounding 15 game win streak comparable only to the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins. Carolina arrived in the game in the opposite manner, having lost three of their last six. The game started off uneventful with a volley of punts and minimal offensive production. Coming back from a scoreless first quarter, the Patriots capitalized on a Delhomme fumble by bringing in a touchdown. Another round of scores, including one by UCLA alum and Carolina running back Deshuan Foster, brought the game to 14-10 at the half. The halftime show involved the usual game commentary and celebrity performances, and stars included Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake. These two were involved in one of this year ' s biggest television scandals, as Janet ' s nipple - in all its glory - was set free for the world to see. Public outcry temporarily banned these pranksters from the upcoming Grammy Awards, but they managed to get pardoned in return for a public apology. This past year ' s game was unique in its competitive character, as both teams were continually thwarted from end zone aspirations. A scoreless first quarter tested the fans ' patience and innovative ads placated viewer anxiety while preventing channel surfing. This year marked the 20th anniversary of the watershed Apple ad that set the stage for influential super bowl ads. Although advertising rates for a 30-second Super Bowl spot on CBS hit a record $2.3 million, companies didn ' t see the price as the main obstacle to appearing on marketing ' s biggest stage. In appealing to 40% of the American people, companies were careful in developing an ad that would positively resonate in the minds of consumers. Of course, certain commercials could be expected, including those advocating Anheuser-Busch products and upcoming blockbusters. The game showcased standout performances on both ends of the field, though, most notable was Patriot Quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady ' s impressive 32 completions for 354 yards, three touchdowns, and his second championship ring in three years. Not bad for a 26-year old, not bad at all... D D - MB
