The Bruin men came in tenth overall at the 1 990 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, just slightly lower than their sixth place finish during the previous year. Due to a rash of injuries that hampered the Bruins, a disappointing third place finish was earned at the Great Western Pac-10 meet in Seattle. Leading the squad was junior Steve Lewis, who won the 400m at the NCAA in an amazing 45. 1 9. Eric Bergreen came in fourth in the shot put in the semis (58-10 3 4) and eighth in the final (59-7 1 2). Senior Brian Blutreich finished third in the discus final, with a mark of 190-9. Defending champion Kevin Williams came in fourth (10.70) in the 100m atthe Great Western meet, whilejunior Chris Vincent and senior Mike Wisnovsky finished second and fourth, respectively in the 400m final. The early bird gets the worm. It ' s an old saying, and though corny, any member of UCLA ' s Crew team would tell you it ' s true. Only in their case, the early bird gets the medals, as all five crew teams did last season. The men ' s varisty, coached by Zenon Bebraj scored a victory over the famed Harvard crew team at the San Diego Regatta White, while the women ' s varsity ripped up the Pac-10 and made an excellent showing at the Collegiate National Rowing Championships. The women ' s novice and men ' s novice and freshman teams had sparkling seasons, proving that UCLA had a very strong future in the sport. None of this success came easily, however. Practice went on six days a week in the early mornings and again in the afternoon; vacations were nonexist- ent. Listening to the rhythmic slice of blades in the water, the yells of coxswain and coach, and the grunts of the rowers while the sun was just beginning to rise over the cool waters of Marina Del Rey, it was ea sy to remember a saying seen on the team ' s t-shirts: What the mind can concieve and the heart can perceive. ..the body can achieve. O CO We all share the same goals and are willing to work as a team to win in the end. We all have to stay healthy and keep that winning men tality to reach our goals. -Bob Larsen, Head Coach m UP AT THE TOP Junior Robert Rynearson was consis- tently at the top of his event, as he vaults his way over the expec- tations of his openents. Rynearson came in third at the Great Western Pac-10 meet with a season best of 16 ' -8 3 4 . ■ TAKING THE LEAD Dur ing a grueling 110 m high hurdle race, Derek Knight gams an edge over his opponents. Setting his personal best at an incredible 13.74, Knight dominated the event. B ALL AROUND ATHLETE Sophomore Kevin Williams comes in fourth in the semis at the Pac-10 meet in the 100m, but a hamstring problem kept him out of the final. Williams ' athletic versatility contributed to the Brum football team, where he played the position of tailback. Sports 123
