Flock Attorney Attorney l I Board of Trustees i i i J x Dr. Eugene M. Allen Dentist A. D. Clark Attorney lra Hildebrand Cattleman, Investments Hubert Tunnell Merchant Dr. Jim M. Vaughn Physician B. D. White Banker "For extraordinary service to education in the South . , .," reads President H. E. Jenkins' latest major recognition in education. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, at their annual convention this school year, awarded President Jenkins with life member- ship, an honor ureserved for a small number of men and women . . ." The Southern Association sets academic standards for colleges, univer- sities and public schools in l l Southern states. To become a member and retain that membership is the highest aim for any first-class educational institution in the South. To be recognized as an individual can obviously come to only a select few. As one of the few, Dr. Jenkins' lengthy list in national, regional and state leaderships contain one contribution unique to him alone: He is the only junior college president who has ever held the presidency of the Southern Association. In 1959, he succeeded Dr. Rufus C. Harris of Tulane University to this highest post in Southern education. Dr. Jenkins has repeatedly said whatever recognition comes his way is for the benefit of Tyler Junior College. And it stands to reason that a man recognized for such "extraordinary servicew would head nothing other than a first-class institution. The people of the Tyler area and those immediately associated with TJC translated this "extraordinary service" as beginning and ending with TJC. When the Student Senate President, Shane McCardell, took office, he was quoted as saying, "The first thing I want to do as Senate president is shake the hand of the man who has done so much for TJC." Under his presidency, the college has grown from 300 to more than 5,000, from three buildings to 25 with the 26th, the new science building, to be completed next year. And with all the major problems, he still finds time to hear a student's problem. Two big professional projects this year were the reinstatement of WTJC and active operation of the licensed ham station. Since WTJC is a low power station, the Federal Communication Commission does not require ETA to have a license. Radio club personnel man the station, Lawrence Birdsong's speech students are disc jockeys and electronics instructor Charles Cunningham is in charge of the transmitter. The ham station is in operating in the technology lab, T204. Its call number is WASDNK. It operates under license No. WSEGW. The station is a learning device applicable to electronics, Club Sponsor Walter Smith said. Electronics instructor Fred Debenport also assists in sponsoring the club.
