Its aims as stated in its constitu- tion are to establish sisterhood for physical, intellectual, social and spiritual development of its mem- bers. The sponsor is English instructor Mrs. Noamie R. Byrum. The organization has performed numerous services in the surround- ing community, such as visiting the home for the mentally retarded, presenting gifts and singing Christ- mas carols to the chiIdren's ward in local hospitals, visiting a local home for the aged and enter- taining at the East Texas Tuberculo- sis Hospital on Valentine Day. Sans Souci and her brother fra- ternity, Kappa Sigma Lambda, also work together on community proi- ects. ln performing these and other off-campus services, Sans Souci is fulfilling its pledge to help the needy and neglected. On-campus activities include sponsoring the annual all-college spring formal. During homecoming each year, the sorority also has a luncheon at the Red Barn for its exes and enters a float for parade competition. Five organizations this year have selected their homecoming queen candidates from Sans Souci. Sans Souci received second runner-up for homecoming queen. The 1971 pledge class won the annual Field Day, athletic competi- tion over pledges from three sorori- ties. For the sorority itself, the group takes an out-of-town trip. The past several years this trip has been to New Orleans. LJ 'K-en! k7UlT1e5 YDPUIUT - n Kappa Sig P ol Tables Yield Scholarships Kappa Sigma Lambda's Stu- dent Center pool tables will send three persons to college each year. The fraternity will begin a- warding tuition scholarships next semester. Kappa Sigma Lambda Pres- ident Thad Felder says the first ones will be three one-semester scholarships. But beginning in the fall, scholarships will be ona full year basis "as long as the four pool tables remain in the Student Center." Half of all money the coin- operated tables -take in from the 25-cent games goes to Kappa Sig- ma Lambda. The other half goes to the local ownefof the tables. Felder said applications and selection of scholarship re- cipients will be left up to the administration. Why would a fraternity choose to establish a scholarship? A the pride in knowing you have helped someone," Felder explained. When the fraternity got ap- proval to sponsor tables, they appointed a committee to decide what to do with the money. "We came up with some real- ly good ideas--but the scholar- ship suggestion was the only one ' that got the unanimous approval of the fraternity members," Fel- der said. Th? .f1T3f9TDitY.d551iQeG C0 PHY only tuition rather than tuition and books because "we wanted to help as m'any people as possible." Felder said the, scholarship is part of the fraternity's "push for acceptance as aworthy, func- tioning campus organization." Kappa Sig, like other .campus fraternities, is trying to change the image of the fraternity from "Saturday night beer parties" and "carousing around. ' 'A Although nothing definite has been' decided, Felder says there is some discussion of opening the Student Center at night. "Changing their image," acl cording to Felder, "also means cutting the word 'tradition' out of our vocabulary." His fraternity has asked the college's scholarship committee to select recipients because the fraternity does not feel qualified. President H. E. Jenkins said a "faculty scholarship commit- tee" would select applicants on the basis of scholastic ability and financial need. , , All applications for the schol- arships will be handled by Ad- ministrative Assistant Miss Ava Gentry, he said. The StudentlCenter is open 7 a.m.--4 p.m. and Felder says he hasn't seen an empt-y table yet. Floyd Wagstaff is that man. He has met all standards for the fulfill- ment of manhood because he is disciplined and has a firm belief in God. For 25 years he has spent the better part of each day striving to make his college better, both aca- demically and physically. His record speaks for itself. He is the National Junior College Athlet- ic Association record holder for most wins in a career and he has received the Certificate of Service four times in his 25 years at TJC. His name is spoken with reverence in Hutchinson, Kans. He has made iunior college sports part of what it is today . . . a system of proving that young athletes can compete in maior colleges after spending two years in preparation for the big time. Floyd Wagstaff . . . We the 1972 Apache Staff dedicate this section to you for your work, loyal- ty and service to mankind. May you always carry your standards high and never accept anything but the best. - Sports Staff - FOR PRIVACY 'v wi usa Texas Junior College H SPGRTS 721 With backs to the wall after two straight losses, the Apaches roared back to nine vic- tories without a loss and blew eight confer- ence foes aside in their quest for victory. The '72 Apache basketball season is one fans will never for- get. - Coach Floyd Wagstaff began the season iust 10 games shy of breaking the record for most wins in a career by a junior col- lege coach. lt was a record he was to surpass with some diffi- cult . The Apaches stumbled, sputtered and fell three times before the Christmas break to go home thinking of the 6-3 record they left behind. Then they arrived. After the break nine teams fell like domi- noes lined up in a row and the Apaches were in first place in the conference. Then Kilgore College dropped the Apaches into a tie before Tyler came back the next week and moved into the lead with a 120-106 win. The win over Kilgore was characteristic of the Apaches. They avenged every loss they took. San Jacinto, Lon Morris and the University of Houston freshmen all fell in second meet- ings. The Apaches also went through the entire season without losing on their home court as they reeled off 13 victories on the friendly confines of Wagstaff Gym before the Regional play- offs.
