J E . 4 'Fifi a if 2 The '7l Apache Yearbook is a glimpse of TJC as it ends its first quarter century on the hill. Established in l926, the campus was on the public high school grounds until it moved to its present site - 40 acres then but 75 now. It has undergone some changes in this 25-year history. lts physical growth is one. lts standing in the Southern Association of Colleges and Universities which places its academic rating in the nation's highest is another. Teaching methods have changed. Other changes - and perhaps more sig- nificant - have come in ideas and philos- ophy. Though its physical beauty has escaped the costly violence that has turned some campuses into battlefields, equality and in- dividualism are here. Directors of Personnel Seven directors head various departments other than academic. One of the seven, working with all others, is Gene Blakely, business manager. Blakely works directly under the fiscal Vice President, R. H. Bar- rett. This office handles most business and financial affairs for the college: bookkeeping, payroll, federal and state reporting, purchasing of all supplies and equipment. Along with these duties, Blakely and his staff oversee new building proi- ects, as well as the maintenance of other buildings and equipment. The fiscal vice president's office also determines the annual financial re- quirements of the college. The office is in charge of financial assistance through loans and scholar- ships. Ch: Gamma Iota Fraternity Chi Gamma Iota, newly formed fraternity for ex- servicemen, performed as their first service project a semiformal flag raising cere- mony in military style. The ceremony at 7:30 A.M. was on Armistice Day, No- vember I I. The ex-servicemen marched single file to the flag pole where an honor guard raised the colors as Edwin Fowler's Apache Band played the na- tional anthem. Among those present were the officers: President Ronald E. Wilson, Vice-President Jerry Grisham, Treasurer Bill Wil- son, Chapter Relations Repre- sentative Dennis M. McKay and Recording Secretary Homer Farmer. Also present were co-spon- sors for the fraternity, Busi- ness Instructor Alan Haynes and Government Instructor Mike Watkins, members Ruben Ray, John Lowdermilk, Roy Burk, Wayne Jeffcoat, John Money, Don Day, David Williams and Roy Allen. The organization plans to help wherever possible in any veteran-related activities. With this in mind they are set- ting up a scholarship fund to assist members who may need help. In other activities Chi Gamma Iota has formed vol- leyball and basketball teams and competes in intramural games. They also marched in the Texas Rose Festival Parade as "strutters." Members of Chi Gamma Iota raise the flag every day at 7:30 a.m. The proiect is an example of patri- otism. Members hope it will influ- ence others. The Singing Apaches The '70-'7l school year was perhaps the bus- iest in history for the Concert Choir, the Singing Apaches. A 35 member ensemble was the fea- tured entertainment for the Texas Rose Festival Coronation - the third year the Singing Apaches have headlined this event. Students sang such numbers as "Everything's Coming Up Roses," "What Are You Doing The Rest of Your Life," "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head," "What the World Needs Now ls Love," and "lf Ever I Would Leave You" by the male section. Appearances of the full 60 voice choir in the I fall semester included the English teacher's con- I vention at TJC, Veteran's Day observance at the Fountain Plaza in downtown Tyler, Lion's Club and Woman's Forum meetings, climaxed by the annual television "Christmas Special" in full color for KLTV. This program was video- taped and the station ran it three times. The spring semester was highlighted by the highly successful production of Irving Berlin's "Annie Get Your Gun." The choir did the musi- cal in co-operation with the drama department. Direction and choreography was by Utah Ground. ,Qt . 06 1.4 SINGING APACHES: First row to right: Pom Mason, Paula Piccolo, Becky Petty, HOIIICOX, Eddie Dunn, Herb Fair, -If-f DCNNY Bl-"'9e55f David WUICIVOPI Slew 5'II Donna Barron, Sylvia Cook, Sheila Wilson, Ann Stitt, Celia Hunter. Other aims are to promote knowledge of African culture and Black American Heritage as well as unity in the college and community. Membership is open to all students. One week of pledging - secrets that remain secrets except to pledges and members - and one "Hell Night" officially gave all pledges full membership. Service: Interested in helping students raise their grades, Tom Oliphant pro- posed plans for student tutoring. This student tutoring plan beginning in the Afro- American Society was also Oliphant's idea of student participation with adminis- tration and faculty. Among other services was helping a family whose house was destroyed by fire. Members of her representative organization named her their most beautiful candidate. ln the December pageant, Tyler iudges named a Most Beautiful and four runners-up from the 28 can- didates. Nineteen-year-old Bobbye Morris of Van, a speech major and representing the drama club, Las Mascaras, was named Most Beautiful. Her casual dress was an orange slacks suit and her evening dress a light blue and silver gown. The Student Senate sponsors the annual pageant. Dean of Student Life, Edwin Fowler, emceed it. The Apache Belles and Apache Band supplied entertain- ment. Following Miss Morris, iudges named Brenda Ma- duzia of Fort Worth next Most Beautiful. Second to Miss Morris was Jackie York of Mar- shall. Miss Maduzia represented Zeta Phi Omega sorori- ty and Miss York represented Vaughn Hall. Miss Morris and the four runners-up received roses. Miss Beddoe of Quitman, representing the Home Economics Club, was third runner-up. Miss Etheridge of Tyler, representing the Young Republican Club, was fourth runner-up. Other than physical beauty, the coeds were judged on their selection of dress and its effective- ness, as well as on their speech and poise, said the dean of women, Mrs. Eva Saunders. Mrs. Saunders said judges considered inner beau- ty equally as important as the physical beauty of the girl. Each coed made two appearances before the pub- lic, one in casual dress and the other in evening dress. Sophomore Belles Jan Jones and Carleta Hathcox were in charge of Belle and Band entertainment. The five most beautiful were sophomores. The 23 remaining beauties, pictured on the fol- lowing pages, are freshmen and sophomores. Millions of persons across the United States have heard the name of Tyler Junior College because of these two groups. High on the dancing- musical team's achievements this school year are four full half time television performances at major professional football games. 177 There are no little performances among Apache Belle engagements. Whether it's a coast-to-coast broadcast or simply escort- ing visitors about campus, the Belles make their performance the same - BIG. They welcomed Lady Bird Johnson to Tyler during the Texas Rose Festival, they went to Longview to perform at President Nixon's appearance, but they also met lesser royalty at the local airport and planted "When l am a Belle" hope in the hearts of little ones at the Santa parade. ln all their local, state, and national per- formances, they have officially missed one day of classes - the Friday they left for Washington. Their grades reflect their attendance and their pride. Almost half of them - 50 of the ll5 - made the Dean's List. President Nixon became an honorary Apache Beau when four Belles presented Nixon's honor- ary certificate to Staff Assistant Mike Ferrell. The presentation was in the East Garden of the White House, Nov. 21 when the Apache Band and Apache Belles went to Washington, D. C. to perform at halftime of the Cowboy-Redskin game. Belles with Ferrell are left: Reda Barnett, Linda Barnett, Becky Wagstaff, and Betsy Wag- staff. 178 tl'l"".'. li Wt't't'i i 'Q t 4 r ,AF ic -an -f' f..:'- 3 l ' 0 , - - ,AJ . 2 nl , ..
