Being equally fair to each girl and boy. It knows when we're sorrowfulg it knows when we're glad Holding the grief when "exams" are had. It shows us ambitions that we can achieve, And makes us thankful for all we receive. VVhether we're stupid or whether we're smart, There lingers a memory within our heart That calls us back to that old school of ours, To remind us again of those studious hours. Old building, we love voug we will cherish vou, too: You who have sheltered us all the wav through. There is no other building that can quite hold a light To you who have made things so wonderfully bright. -Cxninm, Htxskiiw flu-11' 1"IA'I't' 5493: 'iz-by ' . a I 1 C . 1 i jgflfdl' of Qgoola' i I I Q I :Q I I I I U I S'1'111o1'.v I I 1 I ' i .l ll 111 11111 I 1 I i I llfjf,fl',fl,I',II,,lUH I - . School mates, we're high seniors nowl lVe've earned graduation by the "sweat of our brow," For eleven long years welye toiled ohl so hard! But a cap and a gown surely is a reward. Remember, as freshmen, high school we enteredl Toward new teachers, new studies, our interests were centered, Tho' we felt mighty smart, we were remarkably dumb, And at scorn of the seniors we would stand almost numb. How important we felt just before examination, llut when we were through with them, we were almost in prostrationg And then when our cards told us we were promoted, lVe hoorayed, and ran to inform parents devoted. Then back to school next year, we took our new places As sophomores, glad to see all our friends' faces, XVe began getting accustomed to the routine of the school, lfor, being past "fish" stage, we were no longer the fool. Next as bright juniors we began knowledge to store: VVe learned all about history and all kinds of folkloreg Now, only to be seniors we began to yearn, lint before then we found that we had much to learn. At last as seniors we prance in the hall, Hoping and praying our grades will not fall. On poor freshmen we look down with intelligent b1'ow, 'l'hree cheers, my friends, we're high seniors nowl -Clmzratfnn AIARNI.-XR. l'fnn' S'1',rIm'n LYoNEi.1. AIKEN C. F. l3E.u-r. Debenport lllartha Odom Despite the fact that the Tyler High Chamber of Commerce has this year been deprived of its source of revenue by the abolishing of the Students' Supply Store, it has accomplished much. Due to the fact that it is impossible for the high school to comply with the rules of the National junior Chamber of Commerce, it was necessary to change its name to the one by which it is now known, the Tyler High Chamber of Commerce. As a result of the efforts of the club, a bulletin board has been placed in the hall across from the office. It has proved itself very beneficial to the students. The club also repaid Rlrs. Owens ten dollars which she had spent as the balance necessary to purchase a picture for the school. Besides these expenditures, ten dollars have been given toward the building of the tennis court. Perhaps the most important step taken to arouse the interest of the students toward the welfare of the school was one in which the club sponsored a library drive for books to be donated to the library. The T. H. C. of C. urged the Parent-Teachers Association to have shrubbery planted on the school grounds. This step was taken. and not only are the grounds beautified to a great extent, but through the appeal of this organization and the faculty, the students do not abuse the shrubbery. and they take pride in having the grounds kept orderly and beautiful. It is most evident then that the club well fulfills its purpose of promoting the welfare of the school. Since it is the outstanding organization of the school, and since it is gradually growing as the years roll by, it seems safe to say that in future years the Tyler High Chamber of Commerce will prove itself an even greater asset to the school than it has been heretofore, and will continue to go a long way toward promoting good will among the students and faculty of the high school. 1'i1ifi' l".n'lAx'-l"n1u' Direvtors nyc' Furry-Fz'z'c TOP OF THIS LADDER CLUB Ol"l"ICIi R S HRS. The organization grew out of the Citizens Militaryi Training Camp in the summer of 1927 where 11 number of young men from Tyler were in attendance. The C. NI. T. C. organization selected officers from these Tyler boys and instructed them to organize a lylilitary Club in the Tyler High School when they returned home. The membership contains about 130 students with five Senior officers and the sponsor, INTL E. A. Lawyer. The purpose is to interest high school boys in the C. INT. T. Camps which are held each summer during vacation, and the ultimate goal of the club is to secure a junior R. O. T. C. for Tyler High School. The game was featured by long gains by Howard, Stephenson, and Barron. TYLER too - MT. PLEASANT o This was more of a post-season track meet than a football game, and Mt. Pleasant was completely outclassed from the start. TYLER 42 - MINEOLA o Mineola insisted on playing this game, al- though it was raining, and the field was standing in water. TYLER 27 - TEXARKANA o A crisscross formation, pulled sensationally behind a perfect bulwark interference, gave the Lions the victory over Texarkana. Steph- enson got off on the second play for a seventy- yard run for a touchdown. TYLER 38 - NACC JGIJOCHES o This game was featured by long runs by the fleet Lion hacks and hard tackling by Neeley. Stephenson, Howard, and Victor Norton made long runs. Victor Norton ran 70 yards for a touchdown. Booty johnson was good at blocking sure tacklers. TYLER 2o - AIACKSUNVILLE o jacksonville exhibited unexpected fight to hold the Lions to a 20 to o score. The game was played without the services of Captain Neeley and Tom Long. The feature of the game was a 4,0-j'1ll'Cl run for a touchdown by Howard. TYLER o - ATHENS 2o Tyler Lions suffered the first and only defeat of the season before the Athens Hornets. No less than eight fumbles by the Tyler backs were responsible for several of Athens' touchdowns. The feature of the game was a long loo-yard run by Stephenson. TYLER 32 - PALESTINE o The VVildcats held the Lions to one touch- down for three quarters of the game, but a powerful aerial attack in the fourth quarter was too much for them. It was a very excit- ing game and was featured by the hard tackling of Hairston and the end runs by Zeke Howard. TYLER 7 - MARSHALL o This was the first time in nine years that Tyler had beaten Marshall, and was one ol the hardest fought games of the season. This game was featured by the great defense of the Tyler line and a long 4,0-j'1lI'1l run for the only touchdown of the game by Zeke Vlloward. l'1n7r ,5'cz'rl1Iy'-'I'1c'0 THB TYLER LIONS r1'HONI.-XS R.xwi,lNGs. Both warrior and squaw felt this to be a most vital question. Consequently, all of the tribe gathered in solemn conclave. hlany were the suggestions for this record which was to be presented to the tribe every seven days. After speeches from several of the braves and cries of "liow, how" from the squaws, the name "Apache PowVVow" was selected. This was thought most fitting for the College paper, for truly in it the students gather again and re-live the events and experiences of the week just passedg it is a record of the war dance, of the big hunt, of the smoking of the peace pipe, and of the songs of the braves. lt is a sure cure for bad humor, melancholia, and dyspepsiag it hopes to afford sufficient incentive for the voicing and the preserving of the college spirit. f l'mln Hui' lllruflzwil lim: 35315. T IS a fine ,thing to be deservant of praise. VVhen one receives it, it is indicative of a recognition of one's just due and a thorough appreciation oi it. Not everyone who has noble and worthy qualities receives praise, but he who makes himself an invaluable asset to an institution will not be forgotten. In our minds we erect monuments to those who have employed their talents for the enrichment of our lives. This year we would build one large hall and inscribe these names: Illattie Alice Scroggin, Owden Dumas. Illargaret Parker. and lViliiam Xvard. VVe would honor Illattie Alice for her many notably services to the 'Iiyle .lunior College. livhen sornething should be done, she does not tacitly agree that someone ought to do it, but sets herself to the task. She is in truth a versatile student. Not only is she thorough and efficient in her school work, maintaining high ideals of scholarship, but she is also active in promoting school interests. As co-editor of the Alcalde. she has done a most commendable work. In the llramatic Club she has never shirked responsibility. In basket ball. as in life, she sets her goal and makes it. She seems to be so filled with the vivid joy of life that she fairly bubbles over and quickens the sluggish pulses of those who are less active. Owden Dumas has done much for the College as captain of the football team. He must be praised for his true, clean sportsmanship. He has been one to promote those ideals that the builders of the College hoped would constitute its spirit: truth. honor, and integrity. In the face of extreme difficulty he has been courageous and has proved by his manly persistence that it pays not to give up. Owden is quiet. but energetic. I-Ie is a gentleman in every respect and is deserving of all honor. Perhaps much of the peppy tone of the college spirit has been due to Illargaret Parker. As editor of "The Apache Pow-IVow," she has been able to keep before the students a resume of the activities of the previous week. Through her efforts the news has grown from casual and indifferent items in the "Tyler -Iunior College Newsn to lively, colorful articles in "The Apache Pow-XVow." hlargaret is quiet. obviously active. and characterized by an air of dignity and charm. As a student. she maintains a high standard of scholarship VVilliam lVard is representative of the type of student who is earnest, serious, and thorough. I-Ie is willing to do any constructive work that he is asked to do. and he does it so adroitly and unobtrusively that the general student body is unaware of his excellent service: yet we who have received his work so promptly feel greatly indebted to him. I-Ie has contributed numerous and worthwhile articles to the "Apache Pow-VVOw," and he has worked faithfully on the Alcalde. In a very quiet way VViIIiam has made his manly strength felt not only in class but in all activities. It is with joy and pride that we honor these students. l'ififw Hui' llirriilruil X'.':'i'r1 'l'IeIIC ORIGIN OF 'I'HIi SEMI-COLON The land of punctuation was ruled over by the good King Common Sense. It was a happy land of order and understanding. though the dashes and exclamation points were a bit hard to control. lint the peace was not to last. Ifven the Ising Common Sense did not foresee the trouble that was ahead. XVhen it came, the tranquility was broken by hectic disorder: the relative clauses, with which the city was paved, were scattered and un-relatedg the restrictive clauses did not restrict, and everything in general was misunderstood. The sovereign hunted high and low for the rogue who had wrecked his happinessg but the longer he searched, the more puzzled he became. Everyone seemed to be in his right place. Even tht quotation marks were modestly off to themselves. lint none of the sentences could be explained. Now, the King knew that if the sentences could not make themselves understood, his domain of punctuation would fall. He swore that he would find the traitor. Finally, when figuring out the position of each and everyone, a lone comma was found which could not explain itself. It was immediately removed and, prestol all xx as right again. The terrified comma was brought before the King, who was so furious at the prisoner that he ordered him banished forever. Un second thought, however, the wise king realized that they could not do without the commag accordingly he sentenced him to help bear the work of the period. From thenceforth he was never to fail to appear below the period when it was used before the conjunctions buf, flzrrrfozwy zzewr- flu'-lrfxx, and a long list of others. Now, when the period and comma are seen together in this form, it is called the semi-colon. Too, it has always served willingly and in its correct place, realizing that its duty is to promote clear understanding. -Roux Rooiiks - ei? +19 .- OUR NAME Ar a mass meeting of T. Al. C. students, President Gaston appointed a committee to select several symbolic names for the College. The committee submitted the follow- ing to the assembly: liuccanneers, Xvolverines, and Panthers. However, these did not meet the approval of certain students who asserted their right to nominate from the floor. Additional names of Yellow blackets, Cherokees and Apaches were hotly debated by their staunch supporters. The champions of the Buccanneers were just as sure that their name should be selected, since it was the one used unofficially in 1927, as the supporters of Indian names were that fierce "land-lubbers" would be more fitting than cruel "sea-faring dogs." YVell, the Apaches finally wong and the "Bucks," though defeated, pledged their support with loud war-whoops and the waving of tomahawks to the wildest tribe of Indians on our early frontier. NVe only hope the future opponents of T. yl. C. will dread to hear the warning, "Apaches are putting on war paint." -SARAH McCLENDoN Ililili' Hui' llirliffwd lifgflif BLACK,ANTDGOLD Croing when it's snowingg Cnoing in the sunshine, every day we go. C. was held in the gymnasium, the hall being decorated in orange streamers and autumn leaves. On entering the door, eaeh one had the name of a bird pinned on his back. and was told to list as many birds as possible. This was a very unique way of unbend- ing the dignified and giving everyone the carnival spirit. During the thrilling games, onlookers were amused to see the students and faculty hobnobbing as college ehums. To our mind there is that indescribable something that enters into every yvork of art that can not be placed there merely by the artist's hand, but is rather a part of the very fibre and soul of those fi ' who are entrusted with its creation. Some call it personality, some y genius, some inspiration,Abut yve prefer to think of it as going mfr? deeper than that and deem it that spark of the Divine that flashes s from the soul of every individual who undertakes a worthy deed. . . n v L, 3 burely the student body of this school is under an everlasting debt 5 of gratitude to those individuals who have given of the best they have to the end that others may be made happy. XVe congratulate them on the splendid results they have accom- plished and are proud of the part that we have had in making a reality this splendid year book. VVork of this character requires the highest skill and closest attentfon, and therefore we accept only a limited number of contracts each year. YVe look upon the ALCALIDE as one of our old friends and trust that we may have the privilege of serving this loyal student body again and again in the years to come.
