Honoiis Pr'1'.s'ifl1'1zf IJ mn To fha' Students of 19.26-IQ27.' The organization of the Tyler junior College last September was il step in line with educational progress. It has afforded opportunity for college work to many of you who probably would not otherwise have had such an advantage. The future of the institution will, in a measure, depend upon you. It has been your privilege and prerogative this year to create, to inaugurate, and also to set a pace. You should be real pioneers. Students of tomorrow shall be called upon to remember, preserve, and transmit your standards and ideals. The spirit of an institution determines its worth and justifies its claim for support and existence. VVhat shall be the spirit of the Tyler junior College? As students in the Hrst year of its history, it is yours to say. Shall it be truth, honor, and integrity, or shall it be carelessness and indifference, shall it be earnest, conscientious work, or shall it be any way to get credit? lVIy vision and my hope for the Tyler junior College of tomorrow depend upon the earnest, sincere, and ambitious students of today. N KIODERN methods of education there are intelligence tests by which intellect is measured and ability determined, but there are no tests by which the sympathy and understanding of the human heart can be meas- ured. It is the unexpected events in everyday life that reveal these qualities. Such a revelation was given to me recently when a storm drove us from our car into the only available shelter. The lightning, thunder, hail, and rain held no terrors for me. Nevertheless, it was uncomfortable, in- convenient, and expensive to get wet when we were not dressed for the occasion. Besides, we could make no progress in the blinding rain. Finally, we fled to a ramshackle farmhouse that was little better than out- doors, a home that was little better than a hovel. The woman who met us showed no resentment for the trail of mud and water that we left on the floor as we came in, but was so cordial, so concerned about our comfort, that we felt she was sharing her all with us. The fire was replenished, our coats hung up to dry, our: hose changed, and our shoes cleaned. llleanwhile, her pleasant conversation almost made us forget our predicament. From this unexpected contact with this frail, weary, poverty-stricken mother of five children, who clung to a vision of service to humanity, I received a revelation of true sympathy and understanding, qualities not to be measured by time, nor place, nor conditions, but by the way everyday situations are met, everyday problems solved. -MRS. Amee Hartke. X f Q f' f m, , 5 'ale ,, Q 4,4 Z Honesty MQ ,Lg NE has always heard that "honesty is the best policy," but should it become a policy? It seems that when it does become such, it is no longer the best. One should be honest because it is right and one's duty, , not because it might bring him fame, wealth, or some trivial thing that ff his vanity craves. ' YVhen Benjamin Franklin used this epigram, which was to go down A through the years, he did not fully apprehend the connotation that the word "policy" would develop. It suggests any system of management based on self-interest. lVhen one is honest for the betterment of his own inter- ests only, he is holiest for the sake of policy. But if he is honest when he knows that it will not promote his own welfare, he has accomplished something, he has gained a victory, because he has been honest with himself. That one can truly say that he is honestg he has not made of it a policy. s Z' -EARL Cmsrox. 5' X 3 Z 2 -H-1'.f??lf-S-T" e . . eff -- -.. f,. .. if , , ...- -1.4 1' - 5 .5 fr' W ' V ' ' -. How- ever, those who merit this praise are often unrewarded for their efforts and ac- complishments in promoting school interests, by the hearty approval of their fellow- students. Let us give praise where praise is due. Among those to whom we would express our gratefulness, we name Bert Francis, Sam Nash, Floy Pinkerton, Helen Thedford, lX'Iargaret Edwards, and Ina Roberts. Bert Francis has employed all of his forces in advancing the interests of the college. By his powerful personality and mental capacity he has accomplished muchg one naturally attributes many of the Tyler junior College successes to him. He is not only the student and the leader, but he is a remarkably good example of what a true man should be. He plunges into every activity that tends toward development: he enters every organization that promises educative value: he assumes entire responsi- bility for anything that needs a sponsor, and, because of his strength of character and ability in leadership, he leads every worthy cause. Sam Nash is made of the same noble characteristics. He has a most enviable talent: this gift is the power to portray, to cartoon, and to use the brush and pen to accomplish various purposes. His talent is of the most excellent service to Tyler junior College, for in spite of his crowded hours, Sam employs this gift for the advancement of his school. Loyalty and service are his watchwords. VVhen this college began its career, there was felt ai need for an atmosphere of loyalty and co-operation. Floy Pinkerton assumed the responsibility of molding the school spirit. She is the embodiment of wit, spiced by loyalty and seasoned with Cf? wholesome spoi'tiveness. Carefree and happy, and radiating a charm that seems to IW surge through one's whole being, she goes about scattering smiles. No single person if can, even in a small way, cope with Floy in arousing vigor through humor and in 71 producing this spirit. wi If virtue is its own reward, it is useless to mention Helen Thedford, the active , and original person to whom we are greatly indebted as the editor of the Annual. 2+ Not only does she play an aggressive role in college interests, but she inspires the J loyalty and support of others. Her influence is far-reaching, not merely in her circle of f1'iends and admirers, but upon those whom she chances to meet. She, too, is a ,', leader of worthy things. Her character, capacity, and success stamp her as a fy choice student. fy One of the most dependable students that Tyler junior College boasts is 7.1.1 INIargaret Edwards. She is the editor-in-chief of the newspaper, and it is through if her persistence and patience that we have been successful in our Sunday issue. For either prose or poetry-and especially the latter-do we turn to Ina Roberts r"i,,f on every occasion. The Annual Staff would have been at a loss without Ina, not Ki only as an interested worker but as an inspiration. Others have done their bit for Tyler Junior College in different ways, but Ina, in her quiet, unassuming manner, 1 has done more than her part to make it a success. In future years we will all be glad to recognize in one of our poets, an old classmate and friend. I . It is with joy and pride that we honor these students. Following the musical numbers given by Tyler artists, President Clough introduced the members of the Faculty. Several of the leaders who were instrumental in establishing the Tyler Junior College, lKIr. Thell VVilliams, hir. J. C. Hale, lVIr. Gus Taylor, and lVIr. A. F. Sledge, niade short talks. lXIr. Clough introduced Dr. RI. Faber, the principal speaker, as a former Regent of the L'niyersity of Texas. Dr. Faber gave the history of the school system of Tyler from the opening year, 1881, to the establishment of the Tyler Junior College-the highest attainment possible for the Tyler Schools. -. gqllya .- -iii' Faculty Party M N OCTOBER 29, 1926, the first social function of the Tyler junior College was held in the gymnasium, when the Faculty entertained the students. The college colors of black and gold, emphasizing the decorative scheme, were much in keeping with the I-lallowe'en spirit, which greatly added to the 'gayety of the evening. After various games and contests, entered into enthusiastically by both students and Faculty with a feeling of loyalty and good fellowship, had enlivened the program, the group gathered around the piano to learn the college yells and songs. At the close of the evening, refreshments were served. The party dispersed to the tune of "Good Night, Ladies," each manifesting his appreciation for one of the most enjoyable events of the year.
