Confusion raged as actors and actresses were made up in the crowded dressing rooms. Mrs. McDowel1's speech class helped transform the seniors into the characters they portrayed. Behind the scenes much direc- tion was needed to be sure that every prop was in its proper posi- tion when the lights came up. Ed Read, Stage Manager, supervised the stage crew and props. Lois Hirt, Student Director, served as Mr. Dewey's right hand. I8 'is spring concert The band and chorus, each under the direction of Mr. Perdue Pow- len, presented an entertainment of classic and popular music at the spring concert. Songs ranged from "Tammy" to "Close to You." Band selections included "Iubilant Overture," "Rock Artistry," and "Red's VVhite and Blue." The chorus opened with "Christmas Is" in an informal manner. Continuing with this hol- iday spirit, the chorus sang other selections, including: "Toyland," "I Wonder As I Wander," and "For Unto Us." Some had started weeks before, deciding on the programs, getting thirty-six dozen cookies baked, sending in- vitations, and making the rules for the prom. Others helped by painting the murals. The charac- ters and murals were then trans- ported to the ballroom at Indiana Beach, where everyone helped to decorate until Thursday night be- fore the prom. The week started off with Clash Day. Each day the outiits changed until Friday which was the tradi- tional Red and White Day. On Friday, the junior class was awarded the spirit stick for hav- ing the most class participation. 30 homecoming '71 first october afl - wx Mr. Crabb gave one of his famous speeches. It had been built and guarded by senior boys. The annual Homecoming Dance was held after the game. What comparisons can be made between the physical make-up of a cat and a human? Students in advanced biology, instructed by Mr. Crabb, dis- covered the answers to these questions and others throughout the year. At times students seemed rather disillusioned with the course. Quiet screams and "ugh's" were voiced when Mr. Crabb dis- tributed maggots for observation. "Mine's still alive!" was one re- mark made quite frequently as the biologists conquered the study of living things. birds and the bees "Ace, this is a biology class, not a cork stacking session "Come on Lheryl put that stuff in It won blow up." Mrs. Overbeck answers questions about the field of nursing. Emerging into a health careers classroom the atmosphere brings forth that of students learning about the interesting careers in the medical Held. Many skills were first learned in the class- room and then later in the year they rotated in on the job training at various medical orientated facilities. The classroom work and the various jobs helped the students to decide whether or not they wanted to go into further educa- tion of a medical field or just use the skills they had learned to get a job right out of high school. This fundamental idea was studied by seniors in re- lation to the government of the United States, along with the gov- ernment of our own state, Indiana. Students explored the various court systems, made com- parisions of our type of govern- ment to the government structure of other nations, and delved into the United States Constitution. The highlight of the year oc- curred when students in govern- ment classes were chosen to hold city ofiices and then went to meet their counterpart and learn about his position. Economic classes studied indi- vidual iinancial affairs, the mone- tary system of our country, and business concerns. Students were required to establish a budget for a model family. The stock market brought wealth to some and sent others to the poor farm. In psychology time is spent at- tempting to determine why living organisms behave the way they do. Sociology takes these individ- uals, their behavior and integrates them in order to describe group behavior. "I thought somebody said that the Ouija board could talk!" left Hanna reprimands Sue Bailey for a harsh statement. Roger and Shirley continue to prod the rat, while Bob insists that it isn't going to move. 43 concepts of mathematics The concepts of mathematics were taught through various courses: business math, geometry, algebra, advanced math, and cal- culus. Numbers, the students learned, weren't just ordinary, but they consisted of natural numbers, real numbers, whole numbers, positive integers, nega- tive integers, fractions, square roots, and various other combinations. The application of these con- cepts of math were applied to the many different kinds of problems. Business math used numbers to ligure percentages, costs, and overheads. Geometry used num- bers as degrees of angles in the various geometric figures. Al- gebra, advanced math and calcu- lus, worked out complicated nu- merical problems that only the college bound care to tackle. "Are you sure that's right? The classes studied art history and discovered their own hidden talents as artists. Art III was introduced for the first time. Each student spent about two hours every day helping a teacher. The explor- atory teacher chose the area of teaching in which he wished to participate. This program gave the exploratory teacher a chance to see exactly what teaching in- volved and to see if it was really the occupation he wanted to pursue. This program gave pre-vocatio- nal information and experience for those interested in the teach- ing profession. It also allowed the student to realize the responsi- bility placed on the teacher. Although the exploratory teacher enjoyed each session held with the students, he had duties to perform. They often prepared seating charts, read stories, and helped the children in their daily work. 60 w M '50 J' .ui 512.
