The study of mathematics-of definitions built, one on top of the other, from a group of undefined terms, of formulas de- rived by reasoning from definitions and other formulas, of proofs logically constructed from definitions, formulas, and theorems already proved-is most valuable, as a tool for thought for ct person vvho will never see the inside of a laboratory. The mathematics department not only prepares students for the walks of life that require a knowledge of math but also for occupations requiring keen logic, accuracy, and careful work. Understanding Science Is the Nation's Future With the space age upon us, there is a greater demand for scientists than ever before. For students who are interested in scientific careers, T.H.S. offers four founda- tion courses. General science gives a basic foundation for biology, physics and chemistry, Advanced general science, which is a more advanced study plus atomic energy, is offered to the upperclassmen. Such vvords as stimulus, nucleus, cell, and notochord are all part of the everyday language of biology students. Physics students readily speak of Archimede's principle, Pascal's principle, behavior of molecules, and density of substances. The future chemist studies the elements and their properties.
