Library Uperates Under New System SENIORS ANNE FAIRCLOTH and Mack Brown are taking advantage of research materials, which are just a part of the excellent facilities of the library available to our students. Where can a student find information on anything from aviation to Zoology? Where can one go back- wards through the door of history to visit the cave of a Neantherthal man or go forward to view an imaginary city on Mars in the year 3204? The school library is the place, of course. Our library is well-staffecl with competent librarians, always ready to help the struggling student. The library is working under a new, more efficient system this year: The main room is a study hall where the reference books are kept. The east study hall serves as a reading room and contains fiction books. MRS. EVELYN DARDEN, University of Alabama, B.S., L.S., Librarian. MRS. ADNA HOWARD, Uni- versity of Alabama, B.S., M.A., L.S., Librarian, Sponsor of Library Assistants. MRS. MARYELLA TERRILL, Bethel College, B.A., University of Ala- bama, M.A., Librarian. MRS. HOWARD, OUR head librarian, helps several students check books in and out and pay fines on over- due Hooks. For entertainment and news, students at the table in the foreground read newspapers from the li- brary's collection of periodicals. Current issues of sev- eral popular magazines are kept in the reading room. 251 l

Spanish Students Benefit from Language Lab MRS. MARGARITA DEL VALLE, Northwest Missouri State Teachers College, B.S., University ot Alabama, M.A., Spanish, Sponsor of Spanish II and III Club-MRS. MARTHA LACKEY, University ot Alabama, B.S., MA., Spanish, English, Sponsor of Spanish I Club. Spanish, the language of our southern neighbors is one of the modern languages taught at T.H.S. For the first time, a third year ot Spanish has been offered to foreign language students. Because of an increased enrollment this year, Mrs. Lackey has taken over all Spanish I classes with Mrs. del Valle teaching Spanish II and III. Spanish students enioy using the new language labora- tory, which helps them in pronunciation and conversation. It is an aid to the teacher in knowing the individual stu- dent's problems. In Spanish Ill, there is the opportunity to study the his- tory, culture, and literature ot Spanish-speaking countries. LANGUAGE LAB CLASSES at T.H.S. help modern foreign language students learn how to speak the language they study, in addition to being able to read the language. Here a Spanish I class listens to a tape. ttf DIANE HARRIS shows TuscaIoosa's first Spanish III class a doll she bought in Spain last summer when she visited Europe. I24I

,- AMERICAN HISTORY STUDENTS find news magazines RONNIE EZELL LEADS the daily discussion about the world's affairs helpful in the r discussions of current events in today's manifold crises in Mrs. Cary's P.O.D. class. Soclal Studles Stresses Current Events Dates, maps, Senior Scholastic, World Week, Masters of Deceit-these are tools a social studies student uses to understand the world today. Why are social studies necessary? It's a worn phrase, but history does repeat itself. The student studying democracy will be a knowl- edgeable voter tomorrow. With the shadow of Com- munism hanging over our land today, we cannot afford to be ignorant of the purposes and methods of this enemy. As a minister recently said, Our generation will either be the best generation the world has ever seen, or it will be the last generation the world will see. MRS. LOUISE CARY, University of Alabama, B.S., Problems of Democracy, Sponsor of Student Council-MR. M. W. CLINTON, University of Alabama, B. S., M.A., Problems of Democracy, Alabama History, Sponsor of Historical Society-MISS TENNIE DAVIDSON, Alabama College, A.B., University of Alabama, M.A., American History, Sponsor of Sophomore Class-MRS. IRENE LITTLE, Missis- sippi State College for Women, B.A., Mississippi State University, M.A., World History, Latin, Sponsor of Honcr Society. 261
