Student Secretaries, Uffice Runners Aid School MARY ELLIOTT, Sarah Gay Edwards and Vera Montgomery type up announce- ments for the bulletin, as part of their job as student secretaries. At the end of each school year several students are selected to aid the administrators and faculty for next year. These are the student secretaries and office run- ners. During the day, student secretaries are found in the machine room typing and running off stencils for the faculty. Office runners literally run, They collect ab- sentee slips and keep office records up to date. Office runners are the walking directories of our school. 4 H lk 5' is 3 STUDENT SECRETARIES Patty Dameron, Diana Cook and Shirley Bailes, run off a test. BESSIE MAE LEWIS Bookkeeper Correspondence, transcripts, credits, registration, multi- ple funds at Tuscaloosa High are handled by our secre- tary, registrar, and bookkeeper. Nutritious and ample lunches, sandwiches, soups, des- serts planned by our lunchroom manager appeal to all kinds of appetites. The many ills of fifteen hundred students are attended to by our capable nurse. Students and teachers are aware of the contributions made to their school life by these five efficient staff members. NINA BETH PARKER, office runner, takes a mes- sage for o teacher, iust one of her secretarial tasks. PAULETTE McGAHEY PUTS mail, notices, and grade sheets into teachers' boxes. English is probably the strong- est language spoken, and more people speak it than any other single language in the world, except Chinese. World of Literature MRS. BETTY BOOTH, University of Alabama, B.A., English, Read- ing, Sponsor of Anchor Club-MISS JOY BOX, Birming- ham Southern, B.A., University of Alabama, M.A., English -MISS ANNA BROWN, University ot Alabama, A.B., M.A., English, Sponsor of Senior Class-MRS. WYNELL BURROUGHS, University of Alabama, B.S., English, Journ- alism, Sponsor of Bear Facts-MRS. SANDRA BUSBY, Birmingham Southern, B.A., English, French, Sponsor of Student Council, Sponsor of French Club. English is also a powerful literary language. Sopho- mores study Julius Caesar and Silas Marner, among other works. Juniors take American literature, and in the Senior year, the study of literature includes Macbeth and Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. T.H.S. students learn English history from Anglo-Saxon times to the present. IS THAT A dangling participle, a split infinitive, or a gerund? The students in Miss Box's Senior English class contemplate the intricacies of English grammar as they study verbal nouns and adiectives. l20l
