Efficient Directors Manage School Business wr-as '.. -3' 2!4 'f wwf s 0 mill' at swf? tw. DR. H. D. NELSON, Superintendent of city schools, directs the complicated affairs of our city school system. MEMBERS COMPOSlNG THE local School Board of Education are Nelson, Mr. Paul Burnum, and Mr. Henry Lyda. America's leadership role in an ever increasingly com- plex world has placed new and unprecedented demands upon public education. These new demands have been summarized by calling upon the schools for quality edu- cation. One aspect ot good education is undoubtedly academic excellence. The importance which we attach to testing, more stringent college entrance requirements and increased enrollment in such areas as mathematics, science, and foreign language indicate that we all be- lieve this. However, academic excellence alone will not provide America and the world with the type of citizens needed in our crisis tilled world. We need along with our emphasis on academic ex' cellence, a new sense ot urgency about strength in such areas as dedication to high moral principles, the devel- opment of sterling character, willingness to accept respon- sibility, dedication to thrift and industry, true patriotism, emotional stability, genuine concern tor others, and the development ot individual leadership qualities. Such characteristics are not inherent in human beings. They must be taught to and learned by each new generation. Such teaching and learning must be an essential part of any culture and ot any system ot public education which accepts responsibility tor providing the society it serves with quality education. Mr. H. H. Mize, Mr. George Shirley, Mr. Harry Pritchett, Dr. Harvey i-'.' . ae.,
