They seek to capture involve- ment in the year 1970- 71. Each facet of school life must be present in the pages of this book. The story must be told, and the message must be clear. The characters in this story are real. They are the heart of T.C.H.S. 42 43 1970 Rebels 9-1-1 Year JOHN DYE - Assistant Coach BENJIE GRIFFIN, End LARRY BATEMAN, Center Seniors ’71 BILL WILSON Tackle JAY FAIRCLOTH Guard GARY STANFORD. Tackle 49 JERRY LEWIS, Back Football 1970 The 1970 Rebels marched through the first seven games undefeated. In the eighth contest, Irwin County was the foe, with the sub-region champion- ship riding on the line. A win or tie would clinch the crown for Turner and the Rebels came through with a come-from-behind 13-13 tie. Turner breezed by the next two opponents preparing for the region title clash with Wilcox County in Crisp County sudium. Here, the Rebels felt the sting of defeat for the first and last time of the season. But the trademark of determination and the never-give- up attitude showed the true winners to be the 1970 Rebels. 52 Homecoming Court 1970 BONNIE REINHARDT Senior Attendant BRENDA SUE PATE Homecoming Queen MARA MOREE 54 Junior Attendant MILDRED CROSS Senior Attendant SUSAN WHEELER Junior Attendant Cheerleaders 1971 Bobbie Ponder Debbie Rendek Karen Rendek Nancy Jannot Donna Luke Sandra Cravey Gloria Lawson Vicki West Lynn Greene Pat Holmes Spirited autumn nights ... energetic winter evenings ... happy laughter and bitter tears. These tell the story of the TCHS cheerleaders. To a cheerleader hard work is the order of the day. With new members on the squad each year, the cheerleaders tirelessly practice to perfect their art. Often without thanks our cheerleaders inspired us to yell louder and stomp harder at sports events. They helped promote school spirit through posters, inventing interesting pep rallys and cheering at games. For a job well done and to a great squad we thank you TCHS Cheerleaders. SPONSORS: Mrs. Wilson, Mrs. Baxter, and Miss Taunton Girls’ Basketball 1970-71 56 B-Team Boys’ Basketball 1970-71 Varsity COACH RUDENE GENTRY 60 B-Team 62 The hardwood floor is bare, the bleachers empty. The sounds of a season of basketball are ceased. The sweaty practices and giant blisters are over for a season, But the few weeks of Tuesday and Friday night basket- ball games remain in the hearts of the students at TCHS. They all know and appreciate the determina- tion and hard work of our cagers. With fond memories we bid goodby to Basketball 1971. 63 Seniors 71 A team is led by its seniors. By setting an example of hard work and dedication, these seniors were an inspiration to their team. The many hours of practice and difficult games, all without a hard word from the seniors, make them a credit to their class. 64 Baseball The Rebs Do It Again! The Rebel baseball team again this year had a successful season, compiling a 7-3 record. The Rebs downed Lee Co., Norman Park, and Worth Co. twice and Irwin Co. once. Rebel loses came twice at the hands of powerful Fitzgerald and once from Irwin Co. Ad- vancing to the sub-region play-offs the Rebs met Pelham in a one game series for the title. In a hard fought contest the Rebels were defeated. This put an abrupt end to what might have been a long baseball season. But with only four seniors, Don Holly, Fred McMurrian, Sammy Young, and Carlton Murphy, leaving the squad, Turner County baseball looks bright for next year. 66 67 • • 71 The Turner County Board of Education is the backbone of the school system in Turner County. The school has become something of their past, living only in their minds now. The Sophomores and Juniors see the end of the year in a less dramatic way. To them the school represents not a thing of the past, but a thing of the future. Without the people, the school is just brick, steel, and glass, resting, wait- ing for the people to return. 163 EPILOGUE Creating a yearbook is always a tremendous task. The '71 Annual Staff had to work diligently. Not only did the staff want to publish an annual to satisfy all, but they also had to pay an old debt. Members of the staff heard many criticisms but few compliments on the book they were making. With this in mind, many long hours were spent trying to make an annual that would satisfy the student body. It's really hard to believe the book is finished and the work is over. Before closing, I would like to express my appreciation to the staff for their ceaseless efforts. Time after time their patience was tested. A special THANK YOU is due to our advisor, Mr. Crumbley. Of the many ideas that were expressed, the staff picked what were believed to be the best. Patience, ideas, and work form the '71 REBEL.
