Supnrintendnnfs Message Donovan F. Cartwright Cpportunity was once described to me as an individual walking away trom you. As you approach this individual you see unattractive, unkept clothes, matted hair and a generally unattractive appearance, lt is only atter you have passed opportunity and have looked back that you ac- tually see her as she is. From this vantage point, you can see that she is really a very beautitul young lady with all the aualities that go to make up beauty and desirabilityy but, atter you have passed, it is too late to do more than think ot what might have been. School is such an opportunity to the thirty million boys and girls- in attendance, A great many ot them can see only hard work, lack ot tree- dom ,rules, regulations and their teachers' uncompromising demands. These same boys and girls will look back atter their school days are over with regret tor opportunities they have missed. l I have heard so many say, I wish l had it all to do over. l would really study. l can see now where an education is a wondertul advan- tage to one who has it. The sad part is that boys and girls in school today do not listen to the advice ot the students who have gone betore. By the time the present freshmen are seniors, members ot this year's graduating class will be saying, I wish l had studied harder when l was in school, but each year will bring a new group ot inditterent students who will ignore the advice ot those who know by experience. New generations ot students teel that some how things will be dit- terent tor them, that they will get by without an educationg but tor every day that they lose they will pay a tax to this lost opportunity which could have been theirs. This tax will include money which they could have earnedg but, more important, it will include the inability to ap- preciate and enjoy the many things opened to them by the key, Educa- tion
