The Class of ’81 began its career at Tufts by giving the University a rousing vote of confidence: far more of you made the final decision to come to Tufts than Admissions had anticipated, based on previous years’ experience. In the past four years you have been part of many other changes. You have seen the rebuilding of a large Barnum and the addition of new psychology laboratories, the topping off of the Intercultural Center, the restoration of Curtis Hall and Carpenter House and the beginnings of extensive maintenance, renovations, and improvements on a number of facilities on the Hill. You have seen the first phase of the expansion of Cousens completed, the opening of the dorm on Latin Way and ground broken for its companion dorm on the Hillside and have been involved in some of the preliminary work on the Campus Center. You have seen the development of our joint-degree programs with the Museum of Fine Arts and the New England Conservatory, and a num¬ ber of you are participating in the new International Relations program between the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Fletcher School. You have taken the new courses in nutrition and decision-making and witnessed the extension of courses in a number of disciplines — such as anthropology, dance, music, new languages, and a great variety of new computer based courses, from mathematics to Latin. It is your class spirit that has helped to make S.P.I.R.l.T. the great success it is. At the end of these four undergraduate years, I would like to return the vote of confidence you gave to Tufts. We shall remember the Class of ’81 with pride and affection. We know you will be good citizens. We hope that as alumnae and alumni you will continue to take an active part in the development of the University. 20
