DIARY OF A WARTIME CLASS June 13. 1943 Better late than never—we ' re accepted! June 27 1st V-12 Unit arrives June 28 We freshmen arrive to make our place in the col¬ legiate world. June 29 Angel robes are introduced for Jaxon physicals and Navy endurance tests—a few war casualties al¬ ready on crutches and canes. J lTT Classes begin Jul Tr 4 Holiday! With our newly acquired collegiate air we go home to flaunt our 3 days ' experience. July 6 Jaxon learns about 9 o ' clock permissions the hard way. July 7 Pie and ice cream appears in the summer Caf. July 15 Pretzel Nite. We gain our first dramatic ex¬ perience through renditions of Romeo and Juliet . July 29 It didn ' t take us long to discover the thrill of after¬ dark swimming in the Rez. August 1 Navy glamor begins to peal with their Good morn¬ ings to Jaxon dorms at 6:30 A.M.--Hup,2,3,4,.. 3,4, 3,4. August 14 Tufts and Jackson taste out door life on a Help the Farmer week end in the country. August 17 Tufts-Navy Student Council organized. August 28 In anticipation of Labor Day week end the profes¬ sors are already giving reminders of the newly en¬ forced no cut system. September 10 Before, during, and after--jam sessions are in order at Richardson and the Kippi Houses. September 21 The remnant of the T ufts spirit still surviving this war period are renewed on the Hill at an outdoor con¬ cert. September 28 We are not quite so amazed to see Uncle Billy Ransom coast by on his bicycle. October 2 The merits of the navy are once again seen as we waltz through the evening of our first Regimental Ball. October 17 We experience our first exams- ' nuf said. November 1 After our first vacation we return to find navy double decker cots in Jaxon dorms, the caf line stretch¬ ing onward, ever onward, classes and labs literally overflowing, and many of our new Tufts classmates leaving for service. November 2 New rule established in the caf- the regime of pie or ice cream. November 13 We beat Havard 13-7 and present Captain Haines with their goalpost. Service alums back to visit for a day are startled by finding that their fraternity houses are taken over by Jaxon. Many are the remarks on how we have missed so much in the good old days . November 29 Jaxon bursts forth with traditional green bows and posters. December 2 We go to our first Xmas Sing in Cousen ' s Gym. December 4 Freshman dance to introduce us to the social world. December 13 Bows are burned at Freshman Sing. Jackson initia¬ tion period is over. December 24 Our two day vacation arrives. January 30, 1944 Professors note the beginning of the knitting rage. April 1 Small wartime issue of The Tufts Weekly greets us. May 3 Let ' s Dance Hour is inaugurated at the Kurseal. June 6 D-Day Classes are cut to catch the latest news broadcasts. June 16 We are impressed by Prof. Lewis leading Boston Pops Concert at Tufts Nite. July 10 We cool off at Mystic Lakes splash party. August John Holmes Along the Row begins its world wide tour.

October 16 Mrs. Prexy christens SS Tufts at South Portland, Maine. November 1 Navy moves out of Knight House to make way for Jaxon. November 12 3p ' s starts its hospital tour with the trouping of Hay Fever . November 16 T.S. Society comes into being. Freshmen caps and yellow tickets are seen in abundance. November 17 A few returning G-l ' sformnucleus of Vet ' s Club. December 13 Tennis courts are flooded for first skating party. February 1945 E. B. Rideout predicts blizzards - and what ' s more - we had them. April 9 TMC - 1st recovery of a war casualty. April 12 FDR dies - memorial services are held on Hill. April 19 Richardson House now given over - only Tufts dorm on Hill. April 28 Campus goes wild with false rumors of peace with Germany. April 30 Tanglewood Concert plays in Chapel in honor of Prof. Lewis ' birthday. May 4 May Fair held for benefit of SS Tufts. fiHQTHtR V-J DRY FRLSC RLFlRH May 8 V-E Day June 11 Peter and The ' olf danced on Balou Terrace. July 12 Small summer .Veekly first edited. August 15 V-J Day September 8 Leo Lewis died. Entire Campus mourns. September 28 First girl cheerleaders enter Yale Bowl. October 2 East Hall begins to have its face lifted. October 6 Tufts 7 - Harvard 8 John Harvard receives a fresh coat (of paint). November 5 Campus filled with returned Vets. November 15 Jackson elects senior officers and at last is com¬ pletely mobilized. January 1946 Tufts Student Federalists bring speakers to campus March 4 750 Vets take over - Swimming P ool nears comple¬ tion. March 8 Jaxon shares Curtis Hall with the Navy. April 12 Vets Housing Iroject begins. April 16 Rogues Gallery shot taken for yearbook. June 7 Senior Prom June 14 Tufts nite at Pops June 16 GRADUATION!!!!
