Scientific Badgers Competed in arch Fair Earning extra-credit points in first year Chemistry for every correct equation, Janet Noble recorded data as George Coppus ignited zinc sulfate. Right: Dissection of a frog in second semester Biology required delicate precision in cutting open the specimen in order not to disfigure any organs. For a Physical Science experiment, Mary Helen Leon and Chris Hamblen measured first and second resonances by the clearness of the vibrating pitch. Transforming the old Senior Office on the first floor of the Main Building into the sci- ence office was a major project for the Science Department. Under the direction of Mr. Cordon Morphew, new head of the depart- ment, this operation included the transferring of desks and filing cabinets to the room. The office collected magazines and other materials for availability to science teachers. Since Tucson High sponsored no local sci- ence fair this year, students worked individu- ally to create projects meeting standards of the Southern Arizona Regional Science Fair. Those entering the competition asked teachers for approval before submitting entries.

Films on Fridays Entertained athematicians Flashing films and overhead projectors were part of the Mathematics Department this year. The New Math Builder Instructor showed problems to students at increasing speeds to sharpen their skills. Solid Geometry was eliminated and math scholars encountered new problems in Analyti- cal Geometry. Consumer and Basic Math classes spent Fridays viewing movies on prac- tical, everyday applications of mathematics. Mrs. Lois Seamonds returned from a year's sabbatical spent at the University of Arizona. Mr. Lavigne explained some bosic geometry theorems which would help the class solve difficult angle problems. Utilizing the compass, first yeor geometry students created circles, arcs and semi- circles to help solve tongent, circumference and oreci-of-circle problems. Consumer math students filled out income fox forms, Those who earned more than six hundred dollors o yeor ot iobs octuolly sent in the forms for processing. 29
