The trials that attended the construction of even such a simple book as this one quickly became pleasant memories as the annual began to take shape. Our layouts are familiar to you, Tubrnan girl for whom this yearbook was made, and We have identified them sufficiently for you to recognize them many years from now when your memory will require a bit of coaxing to recall them. We have not numbered these pages for we hope that you will never need that mechanical aid in finding yourself, your friends, your favorite teachers, and your special activities as herein pictured. 41 -f JUNIOR MEMBERS Leah Rose Glasser. The volley ball tourna- ment was the first event of the season. Although the seniorsfwith the veterans Ruth Read and Selita Gulledge on their teamj were favored to win the tournament. the juniors downed all opponents with the precision of their team work and wall-:ed off with top honors. The annual Faculty-Senior volley ball game closed the season. The faculty, under the leadership of their captain. Miss Edna Rogers, strove valiently. but they suffered defeat. .ry 1 VALLUSIA SN.-KGS A HIGH ONE - JUMP FOR IT f GOODE PASSES THE BALI. For the first time in the ltirtnrjs uf Tuhman. the Athletic Council sponsored a ping-pane tourna- ment. Sixty-two enthusiastic ping-pnneers bat- tled for the championship which was easily won by Jean Lichtenstein. who was serniusly' threat- ened only by Selita Gulledgc. runner-up. The ring tennis tournament ended with a champ- ionship game between the seniors and the juniors with the juniors victorious. Ground-Sticks--griiund-sticks--gr::und-sticks--ballY became familiar words to the more sturdy' Tubman athletes during the hockey seasfm. There was interest in this lusty sport which was played at Tubman for the first time in three years. The final game. played between the Reds and Blues. ended in a l - 1 tie that was still unbroken even after an extra period had been given to the attempt to break the tie, 11 N. ""i'FT 's x MGRE SPORTS HOCKEY LINE UP Another new sport at Tubman this year was Ar- chery. It was limited to the members of the Athletic Council because We lacked equipment, but we expect to form an archery club next year. The juniors won the basket ball tournament, an easy victory since the seniors had to default be- cause of an insufficient number of players. As the annual goes to press we are making pre- parations for soft ball and tennis tournaments. We have had a successful year and we are looking forward to an even more successful one next year. WISTARIA Through my window Comes the scent of new wistaria, Heavy and fragrant in the darkness- The still darkness. And I know That on the shining morrow It will swing In heavy grape-like clusters, Jostled by the breeze, And drop its satin petals On the spring grass. Suppose .... The beggar with his saddened eyes, The iron politician land his smilel The schoolgirl, dreaming. The men across the sea, behind the guns- Suppose that in a precious moment they would suddenly Discover new-blooming wistaria. Hanging like a flowered gown from a tree. And giving its perfume to the night. Then would the beggar bear the sight of his own face? The politician reek with lies? The schoolgirl lend her spite? The warrior deal the death-blow? HARRIETTE KAHRS '43 SENIOR B's There are seniors in Room 24 Whose spirits continually soar They think they are bright fWe can't tell it on sight, But the rest of the seniors. they bore. PADS They make red paste, tomato shade, To draw some different lips And all the girls who don't indulge Are promptly labeled drips. A red ring 'round the mouth is fine, But anyone who'd dare To draw a red ring 'round the nose Would be called "Not all there!" They put on layers of dark red paint To accent finger nails. Stork Club, Bravo, or Chilibean Will make the teachers quail. And fingernails are ornaments Instead of things to use. They grow long and sharp-pointed S0 they can scratch and bruise. A sweet custom, the friendship ring, We all have them galore. Girls wear a heavy silver band Or two or three or four. True friends exchange their rings one day Next day they have a fight. And all the rings in kingdom come Will never set it right. The fads that people will adopt Are usually quite queer: They seem so clever when they're new Why are they drab next year? LEAH ROSE GLASSER 43 SUNSET 1942 Blood-red against the measureless horizon Topping purple clouds massed like distant mountains The sun sets. All grows ominous-then dark. A war plane-grim reminder of terror and death- Glides into the deepening duskg Shattering the stillness with deep-throated roar. Long-smoldering hate burns pity from the hearts of meng Will it close our eyes to the sunset? And will those who come after us see it again And seeing it as if for the first time Will they call it their own discovery And find it their assurance of continued peace? BETTY JACKSON '42 THE GODDESS OF WISDOM Her temples gone, her time of glory past Here stands Athena, deity of yore, Majestic, though a crumbling statue, cast To be a symbol at a high school door. A thousand years ago her shrines were filled With pilgrims eager for her sacred wordg But now, ignored, her reigning power stilled, She watches hundreds pass and stands unheard. Perhaps, when carelessly some student jars Her pedestal, too lightly speaks her name. She calls a curse upon that one who mars By lack of reverence, her ancient fame. Or, it may be, this wisest one forgives Reflecting that while yet a school remains, And while one poet, artist, scholar lives Though none acknowledge her, Athena reigns. DEAN SUMERAU '43 SONG I have a castle Rich and old Where lovely thoughts I keep. There's evening about it Soft and still Where the sunset Always sleeps- ln sheets of flame, And wells of blue, The turrets tower highg And lonely winds in passing Through Forever sigh .... forever sigh ....
