Then, as the miracle of buoyancy became known to her, with an increasing joyous momentum that carried her haughtily 'halfway across the river. Much as the spark of life was nurtured within this metal hull, so developed her soul and her character through the medium of that mob of people who gathered to man her. Slowly, and at some indefinable, magic, moment of time that mob of people became the crew of the TRUXTUN - each man a part of the ship, and the ship a part of each man - a blending of man and machine such that the precise line of demarcation was no longer clear. So it was, and so it is. During the intervcring time, more than 2,000 men have sailed as members of that crew, but that crew, the crew of the TRUXTUN is still here, assembled today, the finest team of men-of-warsmen ever assembled. You have made TRUXTUN a good ship, a proud ship, you have kept her a'clean ship, a safe ship, and a fighting ship. It has been an honor to serve you. It is with a great deal of pride and humility I hand TRUXTUN over to Captain Smith. God Bless you - each, and all. 0 g c e DAVE worm Q 1 I N N L m 1 5 4 1---" CAPTAIN DAVID D.
