CAPTAIN W. K. DOTY COMMANDING OFFICER USS TRUCKEE Captain William K. Doty, son of Colonel Kie Doty, USA tRetiredb of Richmond, Kentucky, was born at Fort Porter, Buffalo, New York, September 28, 1923. After graduating from the Naval Academy and being com- missioned an Ensign in June 1945, he reported to USS DAYTON QCL-1051, then operating off Tokyo Bay, and served in that ship as Fire Control Officer until the fall of 1946. He married Miss Lois Turner of Annapolis, Maryland in Oc- tober 1946. Then followed duty in USS ROCHESTER QCA-1243, USS ADIRONDACK QAGC-151 and USS MOUNT OLYMPUS QAGC-81, in gunnery and operations billets. He attended the U. S. Naval Post Graduate School, graduating in 1953 with the Bachelor of Science Degree in Elec- trical Engineering. He then studied Industrial Engineering at Purdue University earning a Master's Degree. Completing his post graduate training in 1954 he returned to sea and commenced a series of duty assignments in the Destroyer Force, Atlantic Fleet, as Gunnery Officer USS STODDARD QDD-5661, Operations and ASW Officer on the Staff of Commander Destroyer Squadron 28 and as Executive Officer USS DELONG QDE-6845. From June, 1958, he was Production Officer at U. S. Naval Ordnance Plant, Louisville, Kentucky, engaged in the manufacture of 5 !54 guns, torpedo launchers and components for missile launchers. Following a tour as Executive Officer, USS M. C. FOX QDD-8297, he served as Commanding Officer of USS HAWKINS QDDR-8739 from April, 1962 to July, 1963 during which period USS HAWKINS deployed for the Cuban Missile Crisis and to the SIXTH Fleet. After two years as Plans and Programs Officer for Missile Development in the Bureau of Naval Weapons, Washington, D.C., he attended the Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, graduating with distinc- tion in June, 1966. After taking command of Destroyer Division 252 he made two deployments to Vietnamese waters where he operated as a Sea Dragon Commander off North Vietnam. For these and other operations he was awarded the Bronze Star, Combat Action Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Vietnam Navy Distinguished Service Order and the Vietnam Armed Forces Meritorious Unit Citation. Two years as Head of the Weapons Department at the Naval Academy were followed by one year in the Naval Ordnance Systems Command as Director of Field Activities and as Assistant for Logistic Support. Captain and Mrs. Doty have three children: Carol, whose husband, Lieutenant CJGb W. A. King USN is in the nuclear submarine program, Bill, 19, a Sophomore at Elon College, North Carolina, and Kitty, '12, in the seventh grade. The family resides in Virginia Beach.
