She was com- missioned at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in 1955, and is homeported ir1 Norfolk, Virginia. Her primary mission is the complete underway replenishment of petroleum products to the fleet at sea. TRUCKEE was named after the Truckee River Qpictured below? which flows through western Nevada and eastern California. The river was named after an Indian Chief who, in 1844, befriended a party of lost, thirsty pioneers near the river. A0 147 USS TRUCKEE Throughout her distinguished career, TRUCKEE has steamed many miles and pumped many millions of gallons of fuel in support of Second and Sixth Fleets. She has been involved in fleet exercises from the Arctic Cir- cle to the Equator and from the Caribbean to the Eastern Mediterranean. During the Cuban Missile Crisis and more recently during the Jordanian Crisis of 1970, TRUCKEE played a major role in the support of the Fleet.
