USS TRUCKEE QAO-1475 is one of the fastest and largest oilers in the United States Navy. She was commissioned at the Philadel- phia Naval Shipyard in 1955, and is home- ported in Norfolk, Virginia. Her primary mission is the complete underway replenish- ment of petroleum products to the fleet at sea. TRUCKEE was named after the Truckee River which flows through western Nevada and eastern California. The Truckee River was named after an Indian Chief who, in 1844, befriended a party of lost, thirsty pioneers near the river. her mission

her hi tory Throughout her distinguished ca- reer, TRUCKEE has steamed many miles and pumped many millions of gallons of fuel in support of Second and Sixth Fleets. She has been involved in fleet exercises from the Arctic Circle to the Equator and from the Caribbean to the Eastern Mediterranean. During the Cuban Missile Crisis and more recently during the Jordanian Crisis of 1970 TRUCKEE played a major role in the support of the Fleet. TRUCKEE has indeed excelled in her role as the Can-do, Will-do ship. A crew of seventeen officers and 266 enlisted men keep the super oiler TRUCKEE has deployed to the Medi- terranean with the U. S. Sixth Fleet seven times, each time serving as flag- ship for Commander Service Force Sixth Fleet. During this deployment TRUCKEE fueled 251 ships and pumped over 44,739,475 gallons of fuel in support of the Sixth Fleet. She also visited eight ports in four different countries. servicing the fleet. TRUCKEE is over 100 feet longer than the Washington Monument is tall, her overall length is 655 feet l0 inchesg her beam is 86 feet 4 inches, and her displacement is 40,000 tons. TRUCKEE is equiped to carry an underway replenishment group Comman- der and his staff. TRUCKEE also has a helicopter landing platform which en- ables her to conduct vertical replenish- ment along with fueling operations.
