COMMANDER L.J. CARLSON EXECUTIVE OFFICER A native of Webster Groves, Missouri, Commander CARLSON first joined the Navy in 1951 as a Midshipman NROTC student at Van- derbilt University. After graduating and re- ceiving his commission in 1955, he served on- board the USS JOHN A. BOLE QDD-7557 as the DCA and Engineering Officer. From June until December of 1958, Commander CARLSON at- tended Submarine School. Subsequently he served as the Operations and Weapons Officer on the USS SALMON QSS-5731, as Navigator and Opera- tion Officer on the USS SEGUNDO QSS-398Jg and as Executive Officer on the USS BLACKFIN QSS-3223. He has also served on the staff of CINCPACFLT. Commander CARLSON has attended the Navy Defense Intelligence School in Washington D. C. Prior to becoming Executive Officer of the USS TRUCKEE in October 1969, he worked in Resources Management division' of the staff of COMSUBPAC. Commander CARLSON is married to the former Elizabeth SHATTUCK of Brazil, Indi- ana. The CARLSON family resides in Virginia Beach with their two daughters, Catherine and Christine.

CAPTAIN ROBERT E. OECHSLIN COMMANDING OFFICER ASS UMED COMMAND 2 Jurle 1970 Captain Robert E. OECHSLIN was born in Hempstead, New York and began his career as a Naval Aviation Cadet in 1943. He was com- missioned an Ensign and designated a Naval Aviator in December 1945, and thereafter as- signed to Fighter Squadron FIVE at San Diego, California. His aviation career also included a Korean combat tour in F9F Panther aircraft operating from U. S. S. ORISKANYQ an Air Force Air Defense Command tour in the 539th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, and a tour as an F9F Cougar flight instructor. In 1959 he was trained in A-4, Skyhawk aircraft and partici- pated in three deployments with this light attack aircraft operating from the U. S. S. ROOSEVELT. During this period Cin 1962 and 19635 he was assigned as Commanding Officer of Attack Squadron TWELVE. Captain OECHSLIN is a graduate of the U. S. Air Force Command and Staff College, the U. S. Naval War College, and holdsa degree from the George Washington University in Po- litical Sciences. His most recent duties include tours as Lieutenant Commander Assigmnent Officer in the Bureau of Naval Personnel, Com- mander Attack Carrier Air Wing SIX, and Op- erations Officer on the staff of the Commander Carrier Division SEVEN operating in the Gulf of Tonkin. Captain OECHSLIN is married to the former Phyllis STAFFORD of Hempstead, New York. They have a daughter, Janet, age 14.
