■hmLk . i... j » fa iM C ' « ::.| i - , - ii MB Brothers, do you know what shine it on means? asked 1985 Miss TSU Tresa Hardin as the curtains opened to a stage full of 43 smiling contestants, all hop- ing for a chance to be the new Miss TSU. Among the glitter of red, blue, green and sundry other colored dresses, Miss Alabama An- gela Tower joined Tresa in the opening number and the show had begun. The 43 contestants, the most entries in several years, went through a series of competitions. On Friday afternoon February 21, con- testants were judged in swim suit, in competition closed to the public and featured were the contes- tants ' talent ranging from dance to piano to voice. Saturday morning Febru- ary 22, interviews where held as the three judges judged personality, articula- tion and poise. That night the final evening gown competition was held, fea- turing the opening number with Tresa, Angela, and the contestants. The ladies each introduced them- selves to the audience, and then came the announce- ment of the Top 10. Once, again the Top 10 performed their talents and were judged in swimsuit and evening gown. A special number during Saturday ' s finals featured Carrie Taylor, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Taylor and Angela Tower performing ballet, Melissa Long daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Long, Jr. and 1982 Miss Alabama and TSU graduate Yolanda Fer- nandez playing piano, and Angela Gibson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Gibson and Tresa Hardin performing vo- cal to the music of When you wish upon a star. The music, especially arranged by David Estes, depicted a little girl ' s admiration and wish to become a star. As the last talent ended, the crowd nervously await- ed the announcement of the court and the 1986 Miss TSU. Receiving the first award from swim suit com- petition was Maria Franklin, a junior from Birmingham, AL. Then Daun Long, a senior from Troy, received the tal- ent award for her vocal per- formance of Ask of Me. Fourth-runner-up was Pam Williams, a senior from Elba, AL; Thirdrunner-up was Dot- tie Joe Brown, a sophomore from Valdosta, GA; second- runner-up was Shari Sasser a senior from Dothan, AL and first-runner-up was Daun Long. Then came the an- nouncement everyone had been waiting for, the 1986 Miss TSU — Amanda Ober, a sophomore from Bedford, New Hampshire. Dr. and Mrs. Ralph W. Ad- ams hosted a tea at the Chancellor ' s home on a Sun- day afternoon honoring all of the Miss TSU contestants.
