' H e, Why Democracy works Janice Marrotte '49 The American r public oi today rests upon one principl This principle is that our govern ment shall b minioulat d 1n acoordance with the wishes of tr magority of the p ople This prin cipl is known to Us as d mocracy Ks a word, J 3,13 democracy means Nth rul of the p ople , but 5'-E 'XX of course, democracy has many int rnretatlons D 0 Q0 l' I in th minds of many p ople W all have jf pride in our country nd in our form of gov ernment which guides it, that is why We be if A lieve that we can mike our country very much W as we want it to be as time goes on Thls 6 ff I f'r pride that we have is a great asset in the op ration of a democracy The final authority .. lies 15 the hends of the 148,000,000 citizens X of Am r1c'1 This typ of democracy w have in th Unit d Stat s is re pr s ntativ , and we us this ty-we b oaus our cqptr is so large A true democracy is th b 11 f that men are, or should b , In some mann r equel In th Unit d Stat o suffrage is it nded end th vot rs can ciang their lawmak rs executlwes and even their judges in the Stat s, if so d sir d The power is in th hands of the neowle not any on person With democracy ev ryon has the four fre oms and no on can take them away from him W can do, say and writ wh t w pl as If we w nt to criticize the government constructively to nuke it 1 rf ct, we can We Americans, also, have our choio of an occupation we don't have to pursue our snc stor's business, as is don in some countries This d mocritic fovernment works well b caus it is a system of checks and balanc s Th House cannot pass a 1 w without the approval of th Senat and Presid of and vlc v rsa No one group can guide us but w all oo operate By g tting the wishes of th peonle w guar ntee peace, as we ar not forc d to do impossible tasks by ny one dictator Our fficers of th gov rnment ar elect d by the n oole, and if any bad ones g t into offic it is th fault of the unqemooratic citizens who do not vot T As Lincoln onoe Said, this gov rnment is Hof th people, bf th peonl and for the people The interpreta tion of th se words has not changed since Lincoln deliv r d his famous Gettysburg Addr ss The rules have been made by the people, they do belong to them and they are for them and always will be as longzs democracy reigns in this country. Today, in many classrooms throughout the nation, democracy Is being practiced,'so that when your ohildren and we students are old enough to vote and to hold office, we will haVe'tbe educational background and political sense to do so. I 4 ' ' TOWN MLLTING Virginia Merrill, 1951 During town meeting there were many articles discussed and voted on. There wasn't much discussion on anything until it came to Article XIV, the water problem. This was discussed for over forty minutes. The Budget Committee estimated Gl42,000 would be needed for the new water main Mr Johnson, a construction engineer said the job could be done for S92 OOO. It was finally voted, after many arguments, to appropriate QlO0,000 for the new water system The next big problem was Article IX in the School Warrant This was the question of whether or not the high school would be discontinued, and the students sent to Keene This was discussed about an hour Mr Woodbury talked a long time on wny we should be sent There were very few who backed up his arguments On the other side, to keep the school, Dr Paul gave many wise suggestions Ho was backed up by Calvin Cummings, Roger bmith, Bob Duprey, and many others It was pointed out that the morale of the school children would be broken and that, if forced to go to Keene, there would be many who would quit or play hookey Dr Paul suggested that our large attic would make at least two, if not four classrooms, and the downstairs of the Town Hall could be used as a first grade classroom This would also prevent the small children from walking down School Street on cold davs It was voted that the school be kept and some arrangements be made to construct a temporary building or to fix the attic Dr Paul also suggested a conmittee of three persons to help the School Board decide on some definite arrange ments to nake more room There is no need to say that the hi h school students were very happy about the decision of the townspeople and appreciated it verr much I'm sure Dr Paul and Calvin Cummings will find themselves very popular with the high school students Harry G ' hy ar nowflak s d ncingo rev r Th 'r go ting r ady for th snowball'N h h s l ft foot, nd t ps with his right foot H Jim a do s o with his handsvu Tony Hu holds his ears Irving 'Mhat do you think of your n w tc cher now that she ith your class for a month9n Charles HFrom th looks of my gr du card, I don't think she news her A B C's All I g t are D's and F's The Judg said Ulf this tri l is interrupt d by anybody, he l be thrown out of this courtrofm Th prison r y ll d ' oray for Judgc'N 0 1 0 3 5 , ,V ' 0 - . . .
