The main engine, evaporators and steam driven electrical generators are their furniture and it is a design they are proud of. The evaps can process 100,000 gallons of sea water into fresh water daily. In Main Control, the nerve center of the Engineroom, the watchstanding throttlemen oversee control on the exact speed through the seas desired. The MM's also operate the two steam powered generators to a tune in excess of 2,500 kilowatts apiece. With hard-charging Machinist Mates on the throttle TRIPOLI will surely be home on time! Our forebearers performed a ritual wrapped in superstition and myth and designed to appease Neptunus Rex, the Roman god of the sea, as well as to try one's hardiness as a seafarer. The ceremony officially begins with the arrival of Neptune, Davey jones and the Royal Court through the ship's bullnose. For the crew, how- ever, the events of the day began before dawn with good-natured raz- ing, a merciless breakfast, or slopping of the wogs, and subservience. A beauty contest is next, with the pollywogs, those who haven't crossed the line before, being the beauties themselves. Next is the flight deck for more . . . you really had to have been there. It is surely a day all will remember some time. JP' 45 ie?
