Q0 MA DI G UFFICER Captain Alfred fPeteD SMITH entered Maryland University in 1948 and commenced h.1S naval career with appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy being commissioned an Ens1gn.1n June of 1953. He is a graduate of the George Washington University, Washington D.C. with a Master of Arts degree in the field of International Affairs. Captain SMITH is also a graduate of the Naval War College. His first assignment was aboard the USS SAIPAN QCVL-485 where he served as the assistant FOX Division Officer. Shortly thereafter, he entered flight training and was designated a aval Aviator in December 1954. Captain SMITH has served with several aircraft squadrons including Patrol Squadron 34, Patrol Squadron 45, and Air Anti-Submarine Squadron 27. He Served as the Air Programs Officer on the staff of Commander, Hunter Killer Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet and as the Operations Officer on the USS INTREPID QCVS-11l- During an assignment to the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, Captain SMITH served as the Head, CNO Operations Briefers in the Navy Command Support Center, as Well as Head Readiness, Management Information Systems and Operational Branch QOP-6431. Ensign BAR ES was then asslgned to USS WILLIAM . WOOD DDR 7155 where, he served as Combat Information Center Officer, First Lieutenant, Gunnery Officer, and Operations Officer. 0 Q . In 1960 Lieutenant fJunior Gradel BARNES returned to Naval Aviation via the Naval Flight Officer Program. He then served two years with Airborne Early Warning Squadron E, on Guam where he was the Squadron Air Intelligence Officer and later Squadron CIC Officer. From October 1962 to September 1965 Lieutenant BARNES was assigned to the Fleet Anti-Air Warfare Training Center, Dam Neck, Virginia, first as Assistant CIC Officer and later as Assistant Training Officer. In September 1965 he reported as AidefFlag Lieutenant to Commander Fleet Air Western Pacific, one of the first Naval Flight Officers to be assigned as an Aide to a Flag Officer. Lieutenant Commander BARNES then served two years as Maintenance Officer of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron O E HU DRED FO RTEE which included a,WESTPAC deplo ment in USS KITTY HAWK. In Jul 19 0 he was assigned to the Staff of Commander Naval Air Forces Pacific in the Ship's Training section. Commander BARNES returned to Carrier Airborne Earl Warning Squadron O E HUNDRED FO RTEEN as Executive Officer in March 1972 and became the Commanding Officer in January 1973. Following a change of command aboard USS KITTY HAWK in Subic Ba , RP in December 1973, he transferred to the Staff of CTF 7 7fCOMCARGRU Fl E. He reported to Commander FighterfAirborne Earl Warning Wing U.S. Pacific Fleet in March 1975 where he served as VAW Readiness and Training OfficerlCAssistant Operations Officer until ordered to USS TRIPOLI as Executive Officer in Decem er 19 6.
