TRIPOLI crewmen pitch in on the work. One week to do a king sized Job THAT PAINFUL WEEK IN SAN DIEGO One week from the scheduled departure from San Diego to the shores of Viet Nam, disaster struck! The rough, non-slip surface of the flight deck blistered under the pene- trating rays of the California sun. Working around the clock against a one week deadline, TRIPOLI crewmen and civil- ian yard workers labored to restore the ready condition of the all-important flight deck. Both day and night the sand blasters worked, the blow-torches belched and the chipping hammers flew. All excess paint and the remnant of the former surface had to be removed. Finally the job was completed. And not a moment too soong as TRIPOLI departed her home port of San Diego with her dazzling white flight deck still tacky. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief once the huge task was done. But even greater trials awaited them.
