'Q , S 5 GN V 7 ARRIVAL IN PHILADELPHIA After several months of delay, the TRIP- OLI finally left Pascagoula and arrived in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for fitting out. In a few days, the balance crew, number- ing some 300 men, arrived from Norfolk. They had completed seven months of training at a variety of schools, ranging from fire- fighting to instruction in firing the 3 f50 cal. deck guns, and were now eager and ready for their new ship. Several weeks of careful preparation pre- ceeded Commissioning Day, 6 August 1966. Lieutenant General L. F. Chapman, Chief Staff Officer of the Marine Corps, and later to become Marine Corps Commandant, was the principal speaker. The ceremony ended with the crew mak- ing a game effort to sing the Navy Hymn in unison, and was followed by a formal recep- tion in the vehicle stowage area.
