TRIPOLI's first Executive Officer, Com- mander George H. Sidel, was commissioned a Naval Aviator in April 1944. He soon re- ceived assignment in VBF-8 as a fighter- bomber pilot on the USS BENNINGTON QCV-207. Commander Sidel was separated from the service in 1945 and received a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Penn State. Prior to his recall to active duty during the Korean conflict, he worked as a design engi- neer. In July 1952, Commander Sidel reported for helicopter flight training at Pensacola. He served with Helicopter Unit One and HS-2, the first operational helicopter anti-submarine squadron on the West Coast. Since then, he has had tours as Assistant Bureau of Weapons Representative at Bell Helicopter Corpora- tion, Assistant Air Officer on board the USS PRINCETON KLPH-53, Operations Officer for Helicopter Squadron Six and Training Officer for Helicopter Squadron Ten.
