Webb. The ship was placed in commission on 31 October, 1943, at Astoria, Washington. The name HTRIP- OLP' commemorates one of the great battles of the Barbary War of 1804, This battle is most remembered in the words of the Marine Hymn. Since that day in 1943, the TRIPOLI has been a fighting ship proudly upholding the name she bears. During WW II she was attached to both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets. She steamed more than 200,000 miles before she joined the mothball fleet in December of 1945. On the Sth of February, 1944, the TRIPOLI reported for duty with the Atlantic Fleet. Here she was used first on anti-sub pat- rol, then as a training carrier, and later on as an antisubmarine carrier. Planes from the TRIPOLI took part in attacks on at least three submarines, resulting ,in three possible kills. On Christmas Eve 1944, the TRIPOLI returned to the Pacific Fleet as a training carrier. In between training cruises she made ferry runs, carrying supplies to outposts in the Pacific. When the war was over, she became one n of the 'gMagic-Carpet" fleet returning troops. On the fifth of January, 1952, after 6 years in mothballs, the USS TRIPOLI again hoisted her colors and set forth to do her part in a new kind of war called a cold war. This time her task consisted of ferrying planes to our forces overseas and to the NATO Countries. Since her re-commissioning the TRIPOLI has seen service in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, hitting such ports as Naples and Brindisi, Italy, Lisbon, Portugal, Copenhagen and Aarhus, Denmark, Bremerhaven, Germany, Balboa and Cristobal, Panama Canal Zone, ' San Diego and San. Francisco, California, Pearl Harbor, Haw- aii, Yokosuka, Japan, St. Nazaire, France., Glasgow, Scotland, New York City, Mobile, Alabama, New Orleans, Louisiana and Key West and Pensacola, Florida. The TBIPOLI has certainly earned her nickname. 'cThe Traveling Tn. She steamed over 200,000 miles in WW II and has steamed over 143,000 miles since her 1'eC0mmiSSi0HiHg in 1952. The USS TRIPOLI has a commendable past and her present crew is extremely proud of this fine record and intends to uphold the traditonally distinctive name of the "Traveling T." In World War ll On the 25th of November, 1943, the USS TRIPOLI began the activities comprising her part in WW Il. She proceeded to Puget Sound, off the coast of Washington, for trial runs, firing tests and various other activities in an effort to ready herself for the big job ahead. During the Winter and Spring of 1944 the TRIPOLI operated in the Atlantic, providing air cover for convoys and conducting anti-sub offensive operations. Toward the end of the Spring season the ship headed for the North Atlantic Where she operated until the end of June. Following this North Atlantic duty the TRIPOLI reported to Norfolk, Va., for further orders. The mfg' continued her operations in the Atlantic until December of 1944 and then pro- ceeded through the Panama Canal for duty in the Pacific. She continued her anti-sub, offen- sive operations in the Pacific until the end of the war and was used as part of the 'cMagic- Carpet" troop-returning fleet until she was put in mothballs. With its old-world traditions still preserved through the many years, the 4'Crescent City" at the mouth of the Mississippi is like a piece of Europe transplanted on American soil. E ER L Q ARTE l 5 Z 111 S i Q X 1 V On many occasions we have played host to or- ganizations and individuals who come aboard out of either interest or curiosity but the guests we will remember the longest are the two groups of children we entertained. Our last trip to Copen- hagen on the 4-th of July. gave us an opportunity to treat 50 Danish orphans to an American holiday dinner with all the fixings. Last Christmas- in New York another group of orphans came aboard for Christmas chow and presents from "Santa Clause" Cope. We like to think that we brought some cheer to the kids. We do know that their visits left us with a warm glow. We har Our Holidays The Danish orphans many disabled as a result ot the war, visit the flight deck. Besides the dinner, candy and gift packages were distributed Then the children were entertained by movies of 'their favorite stars Bugs Bunny Donald Duck and Popeye. ATHLETIC Volleyball probably reigns as king of Tripolitan sports, bringing into play nearly every division on the ship as inter-divisional tournaments are held on the forward elevator. With the hangar deck free from planes and fresh paint, however, basketball usually draws the crowds. Enough interest was fostered in the 952-'53 season to field a better than average basketball team against experienced competition. Boxing and weight lifting have a consistant following for the physical culturists. Of course no TRIPOLI sports page would be complete with- out mentioning the Brindisi and Naples softball games which were the cause of many battered bodies. 0 Firs+ prize winners in The TRIPOLI Ari Coniesi' were Seaman Lee McGowan and LTJG Marriner . . , proving 'thai' seilors can paini' more 'I'han a bulkhead.
