TRINITY-PAWLING SCHOOL PAWLING, NEW YORK John and Lois Owen are celebrating this year their 25th anniversary as members of the Trinity-Pawling community. During these years they have been instrumental in helping to make our school a leader in independent school education, something we are all so proud of. John in his capacity as Director of Studies has been responsible for the innovations of schedule and programs while Lois has been a dedicated secretary for both John and the admissions office. With the warm memories they have left in so many of our students, we, the Class of 1981 will also fondly remember them and herewith dedicate our year-bool 3 4 5 8 9 12 13 14 16 18 Eric G. This year’s Varsity Soccer team finished with a disappointing record of 4-8-2. The team started off with a pre-season tie to Eaton College of England. Highlights of the season were in a 5-2 victory against Hopkins and the 4-0 romp over a strong Taft team on Parents Day. Concluding their season T.P. Soccer defeated South Kent before losing a well played match to an unyielding Canterbury team. The goal tending duties were shared by senior Sandy Gilbert and junior Mark McKallor. The defense was anchored by seniors Pat McCormack, Tim Toomey, Owen Altidor, Wayne Goodman and juniors Wally Danforth, Chris Anton, and John Bisseil. The midfield consisted of seniors Jeff Sachjten, Andy Parella, juniors Vernon Meyer, Bob Frost and Sophomore John Leonard. Seniors Tony Quartararo, Shaun Cunningham, Mark Lubic, and George McGarrity along with junior Dave Hobbs made up the forward line. Shaun Cunningham in his third year on the team, and Tony Quartararo in his second, led the team in scoring; while Pat McCormack and George McGarrity also contributed to the scoring. Challenging much more formidable opponents than last year, the girls proved that they had the desire and durability to compete with the best. Better skills were evident in T-P’s play against Berkshire Varsity and Kent Varsity, who were very much impressed by the Blazers performance. Andy Busby led the attack with the most goals scored while Mary Frances Matt as well as Melinda Daniels, added much depth with their hustling play. The defensive play of Yvonne Bradley was consistently solid and she thwarted many scoring drives of her opponents. The outstanding player on the team, and a fine captain, Theresa Baldassrri intimidated forwards all season with her paramount goaltending. The 1980 Girls’ Varsity was a gutsy group with great stamina. 4TH SOCCER (Sitting): Siemon, Moy, Porter. (Kneeling): Fuller. Costello, Connell, Ryan, Morrell. J. V. The team was hopeful of winning the Ericson League or at least having a winning season. Unfortunately, the team was able only to muster one win and finished a dismal 1 — 6 — 1; The season began on a sour note as the team was completely outplayed and hustled by an aggressive Hotchkiss eleven. In that game the failure of the T.P. passing game was most crucial — of nine passes, only one was completed and three were intercepted, one for a touchdown. The following week T.P. lost a heart breaker to always strong Kent. Trinity-Pawling was enjoying a commanding 14 — 0 mid-way through the third period, when the roof fell in. The final score was Kent 18 — T.P. 14. Next the team traveled to League champ Taft and lost another heartbreaker 34 — 28. Plil Kessler was outstanding in this game compiling 200 total offense on his own. Parents weekend saw the team tied by a much improved Hopkins team 7 — 7. The following weekend the team suffered dramatic loss to Lomis in the final 15 seconds of the game. Loomis intercepted a T.P. pass and ran it in for the only T.D. as the clock ran out. The team won it’s only game at Avon, 15 —0. This game was highlighted by the play of the defense, which only allowed one touchdown in four of their last five games. The defense was spearheaded by linebackers, Kevin Foster and Howard Coker. After a disappointing loss to Kingswood, 28 — 14, the team got ready for an undefeated Canterbury. This game was a defensive brawl, featuring outstanding play by both teams. Two successive costly penalties gave Canterbury the ball inside the T.P. 10 and on fourth and four, Canterbury kicked a field goal and won the game 3 — 0 and preserved their undefeated slate. At the banquet Cal O’Callaghan was awarded the Fathers trophy for all around achievement in football and David O’Brien was named the most improved player. The outstanding offensive player was Hunter Faulconer and Howard Coker was named the most valuable player on defense. Coach Morse has 10 letterman returning plus a nucleus up from this fall’s winning J. V. team. All are in hope of a much better year in 1981. 143 J.V. FOOTBALL (Standing); Javier. Miron. Dixon. The year began with a shaky start with a loss to Hopkins Grammar, but T-P rallied back by beating Gunnery for Mr. Hubbard’s 200th coaching win. T-P then traveled to the Hill School and won the consolation trophy by beating Avon and Kent. Highlights of the Hill Tournament were the one point victory over Kent in the consolation final, and Ralph Grasso and Chris Kelly making the All-Tournament team. T-P’s league championship hopes were snuffed after Christmas when the team lost four of their first five games. After that setback, T-P won seven of their last nine games to insure the .500 mark. During the last nine games, T-P rallied for important wins over Choate, Hotchkiss, and Trinity College JV. The starting five consisted of senior co-captains Luke Nelligan and Chris Kelly, senior guard Ralph Grasso, and junior forwards Terry Connors and Pete McGhee. Coming off the bench were seniors Kevin McClatchy and Jamie Rush, and junior Tom Leek. Rounding out the squad were seniors Peter Cleary and Owen Altidor, and Juniors Peter Dauk and Jeff Jenoure. With two starters returning, T-P hopes to be successful next year. 150 VARSITY BASKETBALL STANDING LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Hubbard, Leek, Cleary, McClatchy, Rush, Dauk, Connors, Jenoure, Allidor, McGhee, Grasso. Although the 1980-81 varsity hockey team did not have an impressive record, the team showed through hard work and determination that it could skate with any team in the league. An example of this is the double overtime loss to Deerfield, one of the top five teams in the East. The team finished on a strong note winning three of its last five games. A unique aspect of this year’s team was that it was Mr. Cooper’s final coaching year at T-P after an illustrious twenty-four year career. Graduating from this year’s team are Captain Kevin Foster, Ken Gesner, Shaun Cunningham, Mike McLean, Fred Higgins, Andy Parella, Pat McCormack, and Brian Swanke. The team started off with three impressive wins, then a loss to an inferior Avon team. The team picked up two hard-won victories. Then the momentum changed, and five straight losses followed. Two of the five losses were cases of bad luck. The season ended with a tremendous win over Canterbury. One highlight of the season was the Canterbury Tournament in which Trinity-Pawling wrestlers took from the 12 weight class seven first place trophies. Another highlight of the year was David Hobbs’ fourth place finish at the W.N.E.I.S.S.A. tournament, Many of this year’s lettermen will be returning for the ’81-’82 season, and the team is looking forward to another impressive record. This year’s group of eight played a record twenty matches during the season. Captained by Wayne Goodman who played number three, the team’s lineup included Peter VonStorch at number one, Wally Danforth at Number two, seniors Jim Bodman, Tom Holman, Charlie Derrico at positions 4, 5, and 6, and Sandy Gilbert and Rich Porter vied for the number seven position most of the season. In the opening contest of the season, the Blazers on a trip to Portsmouth Abbey in Rhode Island won 5-2, losing the next day by the same score to Moses Brown, but ending the trip with a close 4-3 win over a strong Pomfret team. The team dropped their first match to Brunswick 4-3 but beat the same squad at the end of the season. Easy victories came over Canterbury twice, Brooklyn Poly Prep twice, but equally lobsided were the losses to West Point, Vassar Varsity, Williams JV, and Trinity JV. The team fared poorly against Choate’s strong club, losing 7-0 but lost only 5-2 against Kent and played a second match at the end of the season. With three underclassmen returning next year and a strong JV squad this year, prospects for the future are bright. 163 JV SQUASH Standing — Left to Right: Mr. Trister, Wans ley. McDermott, Brooks. This allowed the team to be more competitive in its own league. The team had four seniors; Paul Murano, Chip Foster, Tom Norton, and Graham Atkinson. Atkinson, the team’s leading skiier and captain missed the season due to knee surgery. The team should be even more successful next year because of a strong nucleus. With Brian Rodgers, Skimmer Hellier, Nick Stevens, John Cooper, Bob lx, Andy Yeager, and Curtis Flynn all returning, the prospects look very good. 165 Girls’ Volleyball Girls Varsity Volleyball Record: 8-2-0 Trinity-Pawling 3 St. Margaret’s 0 Trinity-Pawling 3 Taft 1 Trinity-Pawling 3 Westover 1 Trinity-Pawling 3 Wooster 1 Trinity-Pawling 3 Canterbury 1 Trinity-Pawling 3 Gunnery 2 Trinity-Pawling 3 Canterbury 1 Trinity-Pawling 0 Hotchkiss Grammar 3 Trinity-Pawling 0 Hopkins 3 Trinity-Pawling 3 Wooster 0 VARSITY VOLLEYBALL Stated Left to Right: Mrs. Hutchinson.
