The early season was a disaster which saw the defending Erickson Football League champs drop successive games to Hotchkiss, Kent, and Taft. The second season was a marvelous comeback which included decisive victories over Hopkins, Avon, and Kingswood, an exciting 3 point loss to powerful Trinity College J.V., and a last minute victory over arch-rival Canterbury. Co-Captains Tim Clarke and Bob Mullaney led the six lettermen back to Pawling in September to begin double sessions. With the loss of superstar Asa Hilliard and a veteran team that had finished atop the Erickson League, the job facing the young blazers was certainly challenging. The team played well against a strong Hotchkiss eleven making 12 first downs to the big Blue’s 8, but losing out on the scoreboard 19-7. The following Saturday in Pawling, the Blazers outplayed a Kent team that was to go undefeated in league play. T-P failed to score on a fourth and one play, and lost 6-0. An injury riddled and psychologically-depressed Blazer team travelled to Taft the following week and played their only poor game of the season. T-P was ambushed by the Red Machine 32-14. It took a zealous parents' weekend crowd and some refound pride to inspire the Blue and Gold to a solid 25-13 drubbing of Hopkins Grammar. The Blazers were to win 4 of their final 5 games, losing only to Trinity College J.V. 21-18. The resurgence of T-P football really came against a strong Avon team. The men from Pawling unleashed a vicious defense and an opportunistic offense as they completely overwhelmed the heavily favored home team 30-14. Next, the Blazers swept by the Red and Black of Kingswood. Three quick first period scores salted away an easy 28-6 victory. Only Canterbury remained, an obstacle to staying off a losing season. In an emotional but sloppy game, the Blazers scored first, only to see a second half Canterbury touchdown and the ensuing point after put T-P on the short end of a 7-6 score. With less than four minutes remaining on the clock, Tim Clarke threw a halfback pass to split end Kevin Finn, covering 40 yards and putting the ball on the visitors' seven yard line. After three attempts, the ball still rested on the Canterbury 7, fourth down and goal. At this point T-P lined up for their only field goal try of the past two seasons. With precious seconds remaining in the game. Captain Tim Clarke drilled the ball high and far through the uprights. There was to be no losing season for Coach Morse's Blazers. The team will sorely miss the leadership of Captains Clarke and Mullaney. Also, offensive stars Bill Leek. Dean Fredsall, Mark Smith, and Jim Leary will be lost to graduation. The defense led by tackles Scott Crocco and Burt White, linebackers John Cunningham and Dan Clarke, and ends Lee Bartlett and John O’Connor was also senior dominated. Although there are many young players eager to take the place of the 17 seniors, the rebuilding job will be difficult. 153 Girls Soccer First Row: Barney. Schmidt. Barrington. Daniels. John. Brill. An eager beginning with continued hard work and relentless spirit throughout the months that followed proved to be the winning formula for the team’s 5-4-1 record. Though the girls lost their first game to Forman, they went on to show their ever-improving skills and determination in victories over Canterbury, Millbrook, Hopkins, and Berkshire. Their game against a powerful Wooster team ended in a tie. but it was here that the girls displayed most exceptionally their kicking and passing skills. Stephanie Busby became the first girl ever to receive the Blazer of the Week award by scoring seven out of eight goals in the first Canterbury game, and although starter Hope VonKuhn was sidelined with a broken ankle after a superb seven games in the goal, she continued to play an important role in the training of back-up goalie Theresa Baldassarri. Seniors Cunningham, Syversen, Busby, VonKuhn, Schmidt, Planeta, Fowler, and Captain Brenda Brill were key factors in the team’s success and will be greatly missed next year. For Coach Carril and the entire team, the '78 soccer season will be one to be remembered. 155 Varsity Soccer Kirsi Row Hustis. O'Brien, Puglisi. Chapman, Puleslon. The team started off well with shutouts against Millbrook and Salisbury. Then they hit a rut where they went winless for six games until they broke out with a victory against archrival Kingswood. Next week they defeated Hotchkiss 3-0 in probably their finest game of the season. The loss to number one ranked Kent in the last seconds was also a highlight to the year. The team was led by leading scorers Kirk McCaskill and Shaun Cunningham. The defense was led by Captain Steve Puleston, the goalie, who split with junior Andy Lovett. The fullbacks were led by seniors Hal Hustis, Jim Chapman, and juniors Eric Sonna-bend, and Dave Strauch. The halfbacks were anchored by seniors John Cooper. Bruce Baltz, and injury hampered Andy Witherbee. Juniors Rick Russell and Van VanWagner also played a big part in that position. The forward line was led by seniors Kirk McCaskill, Doug Puglisi, and Bill O’Brien. Junior Matt Winnicki, sophomore Shaun Cunningham, and freshman Wally Dan-forth contributed heavily to the scoring. The 1978-79 Varsity Hockey Team enjoyed the most successful season ever experienced by a Trinity-Pawling hockey team. Through hard work and determination, the team compiled a record of 18-1-1, out-scoring their opponents 91 to 45, the best record ever achieved by a Trinity-Pawling varsity hockey team. The first highlight of the season was the team's very commendable effort in the Lawrenceville Tournament led by goaltender Drew Lazarus. Throughout the tournament, the team worked very hard, defeating Nichols and St. Paul's, and losing to Belmont Hill 2-I. The primary highlight of the season was the team’s effort in capturing the Housatonic League Championship for the first time. The team did it in grand style by sweeping the league with an 8-0 record. The leading point gainers were the high scoring Kirk McCaskill, hardworking Kevin Foster and very talented Matt Winnicki and Brian Foster. Other fine offensive efforts were shown by Steve Puleston, Andy Lovett, Ken Gesner, and Jim Chapman. The defense was anchored by John O'Connor and Mark Smith, while goaltender Paul Brinkman was undefeated. 167 Varsity Basketball Standing: Mr. Hubbard (coach). Edged. Gill, Stapleton. Leary. The team grew in wrestlers as well as skills. Although the record was not one of great wins, it indicated steady improvement and good fortune. Most of the matches were very close except for some of the larger schools. Although wrestling has some of the most grueling practices, it didn’t mean that some of the less able students couldn’t survive. All but five returning lettermen were new to the team. These new members were for the most part young and inexperienced. As the season progressed, our new members gained the experience and knowledge necessary for a good wrestler. Next year’s team should be very strong and one of the toughest in the league. 171 Varsity Ski Team Standing: Rossano. Matthews, Foster, Hill. Heydt. Colwell. R Trotta. Atkinson, D. Trotta, Long.
