It has grown to be quits a child, capable of formulating most of the school policies which directly affect the students. This year representatives attended conventions at Monument and at Walsenburg. At the latter convention Trinidad was elected secretary-treasurer of the North Central Student Coun- cil and was unanimously selected- to act as host at the spring convention in 1941. Q N vw. R Q5 s Q V0 Qr.. Y H!-V The 1939-40 school year for Trinidad Hi-Y has been most active and successful. The out- standing events of the year were the annual Older Boys' Convention in November, in Trini- dad for the first time in eleven years, the Father-Mother-Son banquet on April 10, and the ice- skating party at Monument Lake in January. Two of the most interesting programs presented were the Camp Wood pictures and pictures from "King of Kings" shown to us by two Mormon missionaries, Mr. Palmer and Mr. Davis. 56620 'I Q .gi 'lr 'I The band has risen to new heights under the able leadership of Mr. Earl Powell, who was a fortunate addition to the faculty. During the first semester the organization was composed of fifty-four members. It enlivened our football games by various maneuvers and letter formations between halves, and it had the honor of greeting Kate Smith at the Santa Fe depot when she made her short stop in Trinidad. Fifty members composed the band during second semester. On April 18 they attended the State Music Contest in Pueblo, where they participated in the parade in the morning and contests later in the day. They also participated in the Trinidad Music Festival held here in April. s me KL ix ? a 'D L U 'K A 4 4129 m?wMw5V 'll 3 'xr A-Q., J Q MXH iQmEiF? Q QWSQQP 2 , . ,,.. , , . S. along cultural lines. Coach Jack Walton skillfully directed the team, composed of Bob Tatum, Jack Duren, John Abrums, and Morton Swetnam, in a majority of the ten inter-scholastic debates held. On the question, "Resolved: That the United States government should own and operate the railroads," they debated with Walsenburg, Colorado Springs, Regis, Pueblo Central, and Greeley, making in each instance a very commendable showing. 9' ,if !jj7?ff7474 fixwiflifagffifrlff-J jf rf' g .1 ' ,fi There's a fine array of talent in that Junior Class of T.H.S. Stardust and syncopation mellowed even the class officers and true-blue fenders. It Was Junior-Senior Promenade night. It was heaven-figuratively and literally. Stars and moons and planets gleamed silver in the deep blue sky. A silver moon, half risen, glowed 4 above Jess Sawaya and his orchestra, playing music which was really "inthe mood." The seniors, to say nothing of the juniors, commended Miss Horn, sponsor, Harold Nor- ris, Prom chairman, and the entire committee for a very lovely 1940 Promenade. A ,lil is r ee, tl GKFPC R6'6'ERCf6.'6' For six consecutive years the Girl Reserves, with Mrs. Bernece Chmelka as sponsor, have been prominent in Trinidad High School activities. . The girls have enjoyed many social functions, the most outstanding of which was a Hallowe'en masquerade dance at the Elks Hall. The officers of the organization for this year were Maxine Franch, president, Margaret Romaine, vice-president, Marie Sawaya, secretary: and Rose Marie Ferraro, treasurer. Organized and sponsored by Miss Ruth Davis, the F. H. C., in its initial year at T, H S., has enjoyed remarkable success in all its endeavors. Built on a theme of "Alice in Homeland," a yearbook was issued, consisting of nine parts and containing, among other things, a "Gi.rls' Creed" and a program for the year. Development of personality and problems of health and beauty were among the topics discussed at the more serious meetings, while parties, teas, and a banquet furnished enterl fainment of a lighter kind. 0069 T5 ll' F-00 76296 C .jj 1 'JV"fl?'ff?fft'ff "fL ,AL . With Walsenburg, their traditional rivals, the white-sh'irted Miners battled forty-eight min- utes to a deadlock.
