A shining palace of high culture But built on quicksand. When will we learn it? The philosophy upon which we build Ultimately determines our future. Youth senses this. That's why we came here, searching For direction ' For knowledge For a philosophy that can preserve humanity And no matter how much we know, We've only begun to find it. So we're dedicated to a lifetime of searching. Our beliefs, our assumptions will determine not only our answers but even our manner of searching. Not only the decisions but also the evidence admitted. Some believe that humanity is a group of machines a product of pure chance That we are alone in the universe with only ourselves to establish truth, or law. Others believe that there is nothing one can know, or believe. For them, this "silence" is the only answer. Others believe, as l do, that God gave us a world to explore and enjoy a universe to explain a mind, soul and spirit equal to the task. An endless processional of black, shackled slaves A sondercommando "slave" shoving his own mother into the furnace at Auschwitz A thousand children in a single, filthy building A trail of broken Indian treaties An eleven year-old Girl Scout raped, killed, and stuffed into her sleeping bag for disposal. But here and there we catch a glimpse of another aspect of the human spirit That painted the walls of an ancient cave That developed an alaphabet to express a thought That built vast pyramids to house the dead That engineered Cathedrals to the glory of God That composed the music of a million scores That constructed a coast to coast highway system That sent pictures over the air waves That built a thousand hospitals and orphanages That sent humans to the moon That touched another and whispered, "l love you. l care." The legacy of our human past keeps us from being either too proud, or, too humble. And how shall we mold the future? The answers we will give first depend on the questions we ask depend on our presuppositions depend on our openness. Will we find the ultimate answers? I have found some. With the answers we frame our lives upon, we will mold the future. A firm foundation outside and beyond ourselves. Manipulation, or freedom? We see Tri-State as a place for searching for questioning old answers for trying new solutions ' for seeking ultimate answers slavery, annihilation, or dignity? The choice is in the philosophy upon which we build. Before Treblinka, came a philosophy. Will our generation recognize the quicksand in time, for examining not only answers, but also questions or only after it has destroyed six million lives? We are continually excavating the roots of our past Will the answers this generation provides prove strong exploring them examining them explaining them. enough foundation to support a future world which desperately needs solutions? A Ski Club l rx- . s X X 4 H The Ski Club of Tri-State had a good chance to get on the slopes this year although the beginning of the season started out wet from rain and muddled the slopes. However, after the banks of snow were plowed through this year there were many good opportunities to slide down ski slopes and run dead cen- ter into trees. At the beginning of the year during their meetings the group had different speakers who talked about group skiing and tried to sell their indi- vidual ski slopes. The lntervarsity Christian Fellowship is an organization open to all Tri-State stu' dents. lts major goal is to help bring stu- dents in touch with Christianity through meetings, Bible studies and rap ses- sions. As a profes- sional fraternity, the goals of Alpha Kappa Psi are different than those of a social fraternity: To further the individual welfare of its members, To foster scien- tific research in the fields of commerce, accounts, and finance, To educate the public to appreciate and demand higher ideals therein, and To promote and advance in institutions of college rank, courses leading to degrees in business administration. Alpha Kappa Psi is the linking between the classroom and the business world for the business student. This link is achieved through various activities such as guest speakers, field trips, and serv- ice projects. Currently, Alpha Kappa Psi is forty members strong, its largest membership since this chapter's founding in 1969. The only poo suckers I could recruit for the job were unfortunately friend: of mine that l soon began to feel sorry for when I realizes how much work I was piling on top of them. My layout department was essentially my second assistan editor, Sharon Martz and myself. Although through the yea there were promises to help out only a minority delivered oi its promises. Thankfully they were Debby Kennedy, Han Van Eyk, and Cindy Huyser. My photographic department, while larger than the layou department was not adequate to handle even the small siz- of this university. The school's camera QModulus' cameraj i a World War ll remnant and operated as well, which man dated the use of my new camera which has almost reachei the point of requiring an overhaul. My photography depart ment consisted of Scott Lundie and Scott Butterbaugh in thi darkroom and Hans Van Eyk with Brad Schintzius wer' behind the camera lens with myself. Mr. Kennard of Newsfoto Publishing Company was a far tastic help in giving some guidance at how to cope with thi situation. The professional photographer, Delma Studios took care of the senior portraits and did an immensely bette job than anyone on my staff could have done in the shor amount of time that it took them to take the portraits. At the end of the year and my patience, Dave Doty too over for us as copy editor. About half of these pages he ha corrected and the other half I am hoping for the best in m ransid grammar. - Ms. Orsagh, the faculty advisor for this year's publication was also a great help in the grammar area although she ha only seen half of these pages for herself. Steve Sekel was my first assistant editor and graduated ii the winter. I would like to thank everyone for their lack of cooperation this year and rest a majority of the failure of this book oi them. The Fall Festival concert proved to be one of the best ever in Tri-State history. With no delays or problems, the warm-up vocalist, Mike Asquino, and main band, Heartsfield, gave a much appreciated concert. The Greek Games went over well with Sigma Phi Epsilon being the overall win- ner. They took first in the pyramid, wheelbarrow, and 16-'legged race con- tests while TKE took first in the wagon race. TKE was second in the standings with their one first and two seconds and Phi Kap took third. Sig Ep won the fraternity division of intramural football with a 5-O record. The Shepherds were the independent league champ for the second consecutive year, being undefeated in both seasons. In the playoff game between the two division champs, Sig Ep came out on top with a Fall Acfivifies 16-O win. Powderpuff football was very exciting with a playoff between the three girl: dorms. Cameron won the first game ove arch rivals Platt Hall. ln the second game of Cameron against lllikai, a last minuti touchdown by Deb Cougan won thi game for the combined Illikai-Sigma Kappa team. The Superstars competition this year run by Butch Perchan, may well have been the most successful intramura event in TSU history. Seventy people par ticipated in all and winners were namec in three different divisions. There was 2 tie in the men's division between Bruci Hackney and Dennis Spearman. Wom en's honors went to Tammy Smith, ani the winner in the team division was Tai Kappa Epsilon. --' s-s surfvztll PM ni vi sf' 2 4 l r .11 ,gf .4 fi JW. '-' . QT 'Xl-L J BMW RP' xi f . Most of us thought that the Blizzard of '78 would never let us out of its grip. Despite the weather outside being frightful, the win- ter activities went on as scheduled. The Winter Carnival was successful with plenty of snow for the snow sculptures. Phi Kappa Theta took most humorous, Kappa Sigma's Dumbo was voted most beautiful, TKE had the most original, and Delta Chi's Disney on Parade was the best over all. Everyone, again, trudged through the deep snow out to the soccer field for the Greek Games. The pyramid, sled race, and snow piling contests all saw firsts from Sig Ep while TKE took first in the 16-legged race. Phi Kappa Theta held the beer the best as they went on to win the IFC chugging contest. The Mr. and Ms. Tri-State Contest was held with awards going to both sexes this year. Ms. Tri-State honors went to Winfer Acfivifies Sharon Martz with runners up Marianne Wingard and Lisa Davis. George Hall was voted Mr. Tri-State and the runners up were Roy Meyer and Jeff Wood. Both winners were sponsored by Sigma Phi Epsilon. TSU's first professional concert was presented this winter and it proved to be even better than the one in the fall. Star- castle and Gary Wright combined to give those attending both an exceptional selection of music and a sensational light show. Twenty-eight teams combined to form five divisions in intramural basketball this quarter. First place in both the "A" and "B" fraternity divisions went to Kappa Sigma while Sig Ep enjoyed sec- ond place in both. The Shepherds and the Islanders took first in the "A" and "B" independent divisions respectively and Cameron Hall placed first in the women's division. The Shepherds were the over all division champions. .l ,.. , A- 1 ,W ,,,, I' it 1 'K' 2 .tm g tix. Tau Kappa Epsilon won the over all point total in the greek games with Sigma Phi Epsilon coming in second and Delta Chi was third. The Road Flalley was won by a team of Mastronicola and Bene- dict. As expected Wes Graves from TKE won the Grand Prix which also had the first woman driver entered in Tri-State's history. Deb Bercot of Sigma Phi Delta came in sixth place. The Kappa Sigma team for the Peddle Prix was victorious once again this year. The International Students Association held their annual bazaar again this year. lt far surpassed any previous year's effort by the fantastic booths that were open for display and the great dinner that followed.
