There was a great turn out for the activities during the week even though the noontime ac- tivities were cancelled due to rain. Since Maryvale's track was too muddy for floats to be shown, the people who worked on the floats in their spare time were disappointed. This was not for long though, as the floats were shown in front of the school before the game. Foreign Language won lst prize for their Charlie Brown Pumpkin Patch. Minority Student Union received 2nd place for their individual Monsters and Student Council followed with 3rd, Following tradition, balloons were let off at the beginning of the game. Even though the game was lost, the crowd still kept their spirit. At halftime, Carrie Waugh was crowned Queen and Ron Jones, King. Despite the rain, Homecoming week was the best yet. C 4 ,, Q 5 ' Q mah! 5 1 tx X' N 2 it 1 ry- .4 ysgdigfifbf qs f xqwiv We've got spirit 'This year the Student Government roused student participation by sponsoring 2 spirit weeks. The first spirit week was held during the week of the homecoming football game. Due to the rain which fell all week long the floats had to parade in front of the school instead of traditionally around the track, but there was a great turn out for all of the activities which consisted of, a 50's day, Halloween day, noontime games and other dress up activities. The second spirit week was held to stir interest in the basketball games. The weather was nice and clear and noontime games were a success. There was a record breaker of 25 people in a Volkswagen among hoola-hoops, sack races, and other games. Participants had a great time and are look- ing forward to next year's spirit week celebrations. The coreboard read 10-0 and shouts f section 33 told who won. ITTLE STEVE RUNS OVER USTANGS Coming into the North game Bruins hopes were dimmed for their running backs, Mike Frye and Ron Jones, were sidelined with injuries. However, their hopes were lifted as Steve Barton was placed in the starting backfield and proceeded to run through, around, and over the Mustangs while gaining over 100 yards and two touchdowns. For the night, Browne managed to gain a total of 275 yards. The defense was sparked as Tom Olivares scampered 25 yards with an interception for a touchdown. SUPER SOPH DESTROYS WEST In our first league game the team was guided by sophomore sensation, Forrest Valora. Valora not only guided the offensive with two touchdowns, but also guided the defensive with three intercep- tions, one of which was a 45 yard touchdown. Also offensively, Tim Tinsley had a fine game connec- ting on nine out of thirteen passes for 103 yards. The offensive gained a total of 160 yards rushing and 17 first downs. The crowd pleaser of the night was Rick Franke's 85 yard kick off return. BROWNE HOLDS ON AGAINST UNION In our game against the Coyotes, the Bruins had to struggle throughout but still managed a victory. Leading the way was Mike Frye coming off a shoulder injury. Frye gained a total of 115 yards and had a 13 yard touchdown. Disaster struck at the end of the lst half when Tinsley fumbled in the end zone and a Coyote fell on it for their only score. The only other score was a pass to John Southland from Tim Tinsley which covered 15 yards. STRIKE ONE FOR THE OFFENSE Looking forward to homecoming, things looked good in the first quarter when Ron Brooks picked off a Lion fumble and danced into the end zone for our only score. From then on it was all downhill. Tim Tinsley was 1-10 passing for the night and the offense could only manage 20 total yards in the second half. STRIKE TWO FOR THE DEFENSE Offensively Browne played the Camelback game as they started it, fumbling. Tim Tinsley fumbled three times and threw four interceptions and Mike Frye had one fumble. Ron Jones scored the Bruins only touchdown on a 34 yard screen pass from Tinsley. Browne totaled only 17 yards for the game while the state champ Spartans had 297. Camelback led 17-0 after the first two minutes and led 33-0 at the half. Dirk also finished 39th out of 247 runners at the Thunderbird Invitational, and senior, Bill Steele, finished 66th in the same race. Charles Lamb finished 40th in the J.V. meet. Browne ended the dual meet competition with a record of 6 wins and 5 losses. In this years rivalry against Maryvale the Bruins and the Panthers split their meets, Browne winning the first and los- ing the second. Rommenswinkel and Steele finished first and se- cond in both races. In one of the most humiliating meets of the season, Browne was defeated by the Alhambra Lions 15-48, Rommenswinkel performed in sub-par fashion finishing 6th, but was the leader of the Bruin pack. Alhambra was just one of the few meets where our Thin-Clads looked down, but there were far more brighter moments than dull ones. V end with 6-6 dual meet record Success marked this years Var- sity and Junior wrestling season. The Varsity compiled a dual meet record of 6 wins and 5 losses while the Junior Varsity had a 6 win 6 loss season. The Varsity season was much more successful than the record showed placing 5 wrestlers in the state meet. Of the 5, Craig Smith and Doug Howe received outstanding honors on the team, Smith got Most Outstanding wrestler, and Howe the Most Dedicated wrestler, not to mention the most surprising one. The other 3 who placed in state, Forrest Valora, Steve Evans, and Scott Armand will be returning which can make the future nothing but brighter. Another reason the future looks good IS the Varsity team will lose Just 4 people Of the remaining wrestlers who will return they all combined for an 1m pressive 153-140-12 record. The 74-75 baseball team is looking for a playoff berth. At this time the Bruins on top of League A with a 3- 0 record. Browne won their season opener by blanking North 5-0. The offensive attack was led by Phil Stika's homerun and Greg LeBoeuf' s 3 stolen bases, one of which was home. Next arch-rival Maryvale which eased by the Bruins 8-2. The game was a let down from the beginning as the Bruins were forced to play at Marivue Park which has dimensions of a little league field. Thus, one of the Panthers banged out 2 homers. The Bruins started league action by sliding by West 5-4. Browne had to come from behind in the 7th when Gary Eslinger squeezed home John Quijada for the winning run. Bruins then crushed P.U. 13-1 on a two- hitter by Tim Tinsley. Offensively Browne was led by Carl Nix's 3-4 performance with 5 RBI's. Next and last up-to-date was a powerful Camelback club. Some of the students are helping to set up the equipment and have learned a lot in this area. Next year we should see the building in full operation. It is planned to work towards a student managed learning system. This will allow students to work at their own pace with specific standards and objectives set by the instructor. Two new programs will be offered next year: graphic arts and an advanced general shop Qfor girls! that will include auto mechanics and home improvements. Faster than a speeding bullet, he delivers electricity from our power plants to your power plugs whenever you command. Arizona Public Service Company Q I S WE CARE HOW YOU LIVE Advertis g 237 VWthout a breeze...leaves would have no life Without a sun... flowers would never grow Without the trees...birds would have no home Nature has been good to us. She has blessed America with the natural resources so necessarv to make a country great. Over the years, we have converted these natural resources from unusable raw materials to industrial products unmatched anywhere on earth. From a simple light bulb to spacecraft capable of landing men on the moon, we have matched our natural resources with the resources of technology to achieve the heights of scientific accomplishments. Along the way to success, we have over- looked the mother who spawned these achievements. To provide steel to build cities, we have stripped our earth of coal and dumped the residue in our lakes and rivers. Trees that provide us with oxygen have been lev eled to build homes in the suburbs, creating urban sprawl. To reach our cities we have lined our countrysides with concrete to accommodate our nation's greatest polluter the intemal combustion engine. We are all members of a society that demands throwaway bottles a second auto and electricity for our homes. We must all share the blame for America s environmental problems. If the leaves are to have life, if our flowers are to grow, and if the birds are to have a home, today's youth must also accept the challenge with constructive effort Your actions today will determine the course of our nation. America can't wait for the next generation. By then it could be too late SALT RIVE Fl PROJ ECT 238 Advertising Herndon Bros. Texaco 7502 West Indian School Rd. We Do Everything!
