VVINGARD, our beneticent vice-principal OU have been trained in methods of arriving at truth by study of rules and principles, by practice in reasoning, in observation and calculation, in con- struction, and by a study of authorities. Added to your training, definite efforts have been made to arouse your intellec- tual interests, your admiration and love for the fine and beautiful. You have been encouraged to emulate the great and noble. Your own desires for ad- vancement, your ambitions to succeed and to be of service, have been fostered and encouraged. Flay this training and these ideals put into practice make you a thinker, successful in work and in service. S. PAUL TEAMER. l DUCATION," says an old Chinese proverb, "is like a double-edged sword. It may be turned to dangerous uses if it is not properly handled." If we would handle that sword properly, then all the higher ideals, precepts which we have learned from God and from man must aid us in the discharge of our daily tasks, so that in the discharge of those duties we move in harmony with the laws of God and of man. lVlARY E. HISTORY ROBABLY every one of us can remember the eighth of September, 1950, for that momentous day marked the birth of our class, '54. One hundred and ten strong, we began, then, to delve into Algebra, Latin, Civics, English, and Science, in our efforts to become worthy high school members. For president we chose Robert Kendig, Ioseph Townsend, vice-president, as secretary, Evelyn King, and Helen Bloomer, the treasurer. Quickly we came to find our way about T. E. In fact, several of us ventured to the athletic fields where we gamely faced our initiation into high school sports. The daily routineof study was broken by our keen pleasure in the Hallowe'en and Christmas parties. However, it was not until the end of the year that we proved ourselves more than ordinary Freshmen by triumphing in the Interclass Track and Field Meet. , With September '51 came the knowledge that we were now experienced high school pupils. Ioseph Townsend was elected as our president, Oliver Wolfe vicef president, Wlinifred Neiman, secretary, and Robert Kendig, treasurer. More fellow class members began to participate in sports while others joined the dramatic club. New scholastic ordeals, Biology, French, and Geometry confronted us. Nevertheless we managed to find leisure to enjoy the two annual parties. An excurson to the zoo came in Iune just before the "final exams" finished depleting the one hundred survivors of the first year to a meagre eighty-six. As Iuniors, in '52, we selected Russell Gordon for president, Oliver 1Volfe, vice- president, Evelyn Short, treasurer and Ruth Hughes, secretary. Many of our members were now star athletes. That, coupled with our prom- inence in social functions, made us feel quite superior. How elated we felt over escaping a paltry few hours of recitation that we might visit the Brandywine Battle- fieldl Then, later, the educational and enjoyable tour of Gettysburg proved itself an episodein our school life that we all should like to relive. e Unfortunately, only seventy-six students answered roll call when we assembled as Seniors in September 1955. Norman Duncan was called upon to lead us through the most tempestuous year. Oliver XVolf assisted him, Evelyn Short recorded our progress and Catherine Hahn worried about our money. This year a great many extra-curricular activities vied with Chemistry, Solid Geometry and Trigonometry for supremacy in interest and importance. Every varsity team included some of our members. We helped to plan as well as to partici- pate in the Hallowe'en and Christmas party programs. Several successful Senior dances were held. NVe had a bake 3 sold candy, and inaugurated a school store. All these efforts were in behalf of the fund which was to make possible the traditional trip to our nation's capital. Now, not even mid-years could deter our progress toward that great goal, Graduation. Spring, track, tennis, and baseball were upon us simultaneously. "Spooky Tavern," this year's school play, was practised and on April 26th and 27th, most successfully produced. It was after Memorial Day that we left for our two-day sojourn in Wiashington. The fact that for many of us it was our first visit enabled the famous city to fascinate us completely. The week we returned we took our final final-examinations with feel- ings that mingled relief with regret. Commencement Iune 15, 1954, marked our transition from Tredyffrin-Easttown High School students to loyal members of its fast growing alumni. NORMAN L.
