When asked her opinion of America, Amelia de Car-valhoe Silva was reluctant: It’s impossible to put into words what life is like in a country because you would really have to stay there for a long time before you could give a fair opinion. At first. English sounded confusing to Amelia, but as she became more accustomed, it became easier to comprehend. She enjoys T.C., especially snow: I was surprised even though I expected it!” English, Italian and Swiss-German speaking Peter Anliker from Switzerland finds the American way of life a new experience. Although he feels he hasn't been here long enough to compare the U.S. with his home, it seems strange to him that many Americans feel that they must be on top. Peter's brother came to America as an exchange student, and his family hosted a student from California. Some of Peter's interests are music, rowing and sailing, so he especially likes the water and the woods of this area. Jim Garber, exchange student from Liberia, finds the women's liberation movement most unusual. He thinks that too many things can happen to a girl when she is out alone ; he feels that girls should have parental consent to leave during their study halls. Among Jim's hobbies are sailing, soccer and meeting people. He is anticipating the winter snow since it is not common in Liberia, and he would also like to learn to ski. I like the way I could choose my courses, said Marlene Weber from the Phillipines. At home, Marlene attended an all girls Catholic School with the block system, of one subject all morning and another all afternoon. Their system also has each class with a certain teacher only once a week, so hourly classes seem unique. When she returns to the Phillipines, she plans to attend college to further her education. French exchange student Brigette Roulonis is here to complete her senior year at T.C.H.S. She likes the freedom she has, such as conversing freely with teachers, leaving during free periods, and changing classrooms each hour. In her school at home, she had to stay with the same students for all of her classes. In spite of her previous misgivings about America, the people here are very friendly, making her feel right at home. School in West Germany according to Mathias | Matthew Winkler is very different from here. They study harder and have much less choice in what they wish to study. In his country, students may choose either a nine year public school program or a 13 year program in a private school. Matthew likes it here, and he feels that people are more free and seem more liberal Matthew has many interests including horseback riding, and he hopes to make the the ski team this year. I 16
