E 6 5 ' I It gb I 25 I THE CLASS HISTORY Twenty fuve years ago lufe at Towson Hugh School was much sumpler than It us today The frosh class was made up of a small group who knew each other and to enter hugh school was sumply to go unto the next class Of course there was the excutement of lookung forward to such thungs as gym home ec ard havung the teachers change classes Instead of the pupuls Naturally too there was elatuon un the thought of soon beung upper class men and eventually attendung theu own graduatuon That was l9l6 We as freshmen four long years ago faced a very dufferent sutuatuon when we became members of the elute or hugh schoolers Confusuon reugned The buuldung swarmed wuth masses of tall people and strange unfamuluar teachers We felt luke luttle Insugnufucant ants And then to add to the bedlam was the day before school opened regustratuon system then un effect lwe add In passung It us no more? Hundreds of bewuldered Freshmen gathered In the vast Cut looked vast thenl audutoruum to decude on theur courses be assugned schedules and homerooms and to fund theur respectuve teachers We had to adapt ourselves to that system foreugn to most of us of changung classes each hour and of goung to school wuth only a handful of fruends among hundreds of strangers ln any year un the begunnung the pruncupal moment of Interest us the electuon of the class offucers ln September l937 as soon as we got settled we ummeduately proceeded to select our four offucers and choose Bob Case Vuce Presudent Jean Webster Secretary Bull Cooper Treasurer We chose as our permanent sponsors MISS Sterlung Muss Morruson and Mr Sawyer The offucers must have proved very satusfactory executuves because In the sophomore year the students reelected them wuthout hesuta tuon ln the thIrd year the lune was broken for the pupuls chose Jackson Bennett Presudent Charles Brooks Vuce Presudent Dorothy l-lelfrlch Sec retary and Ruchard Patterson Treasurer Due to the wuthdrawal of Jackson Bennett we swutched affucers In mud year and Charles Brooks became presudent ln l94l our Senuor year we had our furst gurl presudent Emma Claypoole Charles Brooks was elected vuce presudent Mary Sue Dance secretary and Mary Claypoale treasurer ln all four years we enuoyed the leadershup of competent and able offucers Each year the class has a bug class party one of the most Important dates on the calendar The Freshman Party was the clumax of Freshman year Enthusuasm energy and orugunaluty abounded The freshmen sang un joyful expectancy lt s C-onna Be a Great Day' lt was a great day A curcus was presented wuth the members of the class as both man and beast We played games competed In races consumed vast quantutues of typucal curcus food lt was altogether a huge success 26 I I I . . . v I - I I I I , . . . ' ' II I II I ' I I When sophomores we graduated to the honor of callung our party a Prom lt was guven on bt Patrucks Day we used luttle green admussuon tuckets and ate green uce cream We danced too to the musuc of a hured nuckelodeon Our second class party was a hut too Then un our Junuor year came one of the bug events of our lufe at Towson the only party we gave the Junuor Senuor Prom The audutoruum has seen many a gay spec tacle but thus one ut wull always remember That versatule hall was dec orated to resemble a French sudewalk restaurant the Cafe Ouarante The humble yellow spotlught was glorufued that nught of nughts lts place un the cast was the role of the moon and ut performed beautufully Our last bug affaur as members of the student body of Towson Hugh was the Senuor dance all for ourselves wuth outsude guests a pruvulege extended only un thus last party of our undergraduate days lt was our farewell to all the good tumes we had had un our four years at Towson Twenty fuve years ago the entertaunments were very dufferent from ours No class ever entertauned utself as we do at formal partues The Freshmen Sophomore and Junuor classes un turn acted as hosts to the Senuors All thru the furst years of hugh school a class entertauned suc cessuve Senuor groups and then funally came the year when you could sut back on your laurels and be feted The classes used to plan partues for each other where they played games and had races and contests Every one pupuls and teachers aluke uouned un and enjoyed themselves whole heartedly ln the partucular year un whuch we are unterested l9l6 the Junuors gave a Valentune tea for the Senuors and had a bug party wuth games and contests to whuch the Senuors were unvuted l9l6 was the furst year dancung was permutted at the entertaunments and ut receuved an enthusuastuc welcome Whule we dance to the stuauns of a modern raduo vuctrola un the bug audutoruum they used the corrudors and had to dance to the tunes of a wheezung wund up vuctorla But they had uust as much fun as we do Among theur socual actuvutues one of the most popular was the goung on excursuons and pucnucs Untul the classe got too large to have the trups at all Tolchester was the reugnung favorute War work was an umportant actuvuty then too The gurls were taught to roll bandages many knutted and sewed for the Red Cross Theur udeas of fun may seem prosauc to us but those were happy days un l9l6 In the make up of the modern hugh school there are many thungs whuch contrubute to the lufe of the students besudes classes Clubs for unstance are outstandung When we came to Towson there were many clubs organuzed some of whuch we could uoun and some for whuch we were not eluguble The Latun French Math Scuence Dramatucs and Clee Clubs were and are an essentual part of our school lufe The Latun Club unutua tuons the French Club movues and the annual Clee Club and Math Club dances are unstututuons at Towson We wouldn t feel rught wuthout them 27 1 . - . , . . . . . , . , , . , . ' 1 ' 1 , . 1 1 ' I 1 1 1 1 1 . . . , . . ln 1916 there were no clubs at all True there were the rudIments of a Ctlee Club whose actIvItIes were lImIted to leadIng the sIngIng at assemblIes There was a pIano but sInce the teachers went from room to room a tunIng fork was used because DIOHOS don t 6GSIly lend them selves to beIng carrIed around on peoples backs The bugaest school actIvIty In l9l6 was The LIterary and DebatIng SocIety lt met nearly every FrIday afternoon These meetIngs were very lIvely there were dIs cusslons on TOPICS of current Interest recItatIons and talks and debates Almost the entIre school belonged to the SOCIETY fortunately the classes were small or they wouldnt have been able to meet In the audItorIum ThIs club was of such Importance and power that the bug events of the season were the evenIng debates It presented annually DotIng mothers and fathers CUVIOUS and Interested onlookers everybody from all around turned out for the show also Chosen teams challenged CIty College and came back smIlIng and trIumphant They even challenged out of state teams The SOCIETY faded out of exIstence as Interests began to change the Idea of Informal clubs slowly began to evolve Of course now there IS such a great support of the JunIor SenIor Debate because we have other clubs and Interests In l9l6 the SocIety was the whole of the extra currucular actIvItIes at Towson The only Informal note a quarter century ago was the sporadIc sororItIes They were many and varIed but only one seems to have had any measure of fame It was called the Eta Beta PI fcolloquIally Eat a bIte of pIe 7 lt consIsted of eleven gIrls and a But It flnally succumbed to changung tlmes ln l9l6 too CymnastIcs and sports were the essence of actual school lIfe Although there were no varsIty teams of any kInd and no Inter school contests everyone was eager to get to gym class and to partIcIpate In everythnng possIble The SemI annual REVIEWS at the FIfth RegIment Armory were awaIted expectantly At present we have bug REVIEWS at the Armory too The Curls WInter CarnIval The Track Meet and so on but there IS a vast dIfference In the OCTIVITIGS presented Then they gave folk dances In full costume DVSCISIOD drIlls and complIcated marchIng forms OccasIonally they played games prIncIpally basketball but only for fun Today we send teams to compete In races to relays contests and such games as deck tennus volley ball badmInton etc TheIr theme was grace and beauty ours skIll and speed lnter school contests are Important In our school actIvItIes and the student body IS enthusIastIc about attendIng When we came to Towson the only part the students had In the gov ernment of theIr school lIfe was a Student CouncIl wIth very lImIted powers lt had the usual four offIcers and ITS forty members served as monItors In the halls Any InfrIngements on the school rules other than traffIc vIolatIons were handled and punIshed by the faculty Some of the actIvI TIES of the CouncIl were formIng a slate of OTIICGVS changung the school 28 ' 1 I . A. of Towson High School has been o ganized and after all one year in the history of the school as old as Towson is really a brief span of time it has accomplished sufficient to have established already an enviable record. lt has definitely stimulated school spirit and each student feels a sense of responsibility to his school and to his co-workers. The officials are then ready for the seige of student electors. All ballots are made up the day before so that there is no difficulty or last minute rushing. Elections are held before nine and at noon-time the ballots are all turned in and counted and the results are posted by the next morning. Q 1 , . 1, . . 1 - 11 - - - - 11 . . . . ,, THE ACTIVITY PERIOD For the last two years the students and teachers of Towson HIgh School have felt that somethIng was lackIng In the opportunItIes presented to the students for doIng the thmgs they wanted to do other than attendIng classes Boys and gurls Interested In the Math Club French Club or Latm Club had to stay after school and bus pupIls were nearly always left out of school actIvItIes Last March when a survey was made of our school one fault was dIscovered to be the omIssIon of an actnvntv peflOd or an extra perIod In the day two or three tumes a week In whnch clubs could meet newspaper and yearbook staff could work on thenr pro jects and homeroom and class meetIngs could be held However Towson was peculuarly equIpped to carry out thus plan becaus of the groundwork laId In a paper whIch MISS Wack had wrutten In a summer school two years ago along that same lIne Last June l94O a paper was sent to each teacher askIng what knnd of work he or she was Interested In sponsorlng durlng actIvIty perIods Seven faculty commIttees were organIzed Among these are the ACTIVITY Program Commlttee the CuIdance CommIttee the Homeroom OrganIza tIon Commlttee and the Assembly Program Commlttee After the faculty s preferences were straIghtened out attentIon was next turned toward de Cldlng what actIvItIes should be fostered and In what order they should come Throughout the summer pupIl schedules were made out assIgnIng IndIvIduals to those groups In whIch they had manlfested an Interest and In the fall the actIvIty perIod was Introduced to the student body The actIvIty perIod IS now a forty fIVe mlnute perIod whlch comes three tImes a week shortenIng the regular perIods on hese days and add Ing an extra perIod whIch usually comes just before lunchtIme DurIng these perIods all students are assIgned to defInIte rooms and teachers for such OCIIVIIIES as assemblues class and homeroom meetIngs SESSIONS of the Student Government OrganIzatIon Sldellghts and Talnsman staff meetIngs and supervIsed study classes The added tIme gIven to the SIdelIghts staff enables It to really learn somethung about Iournallsm Instead of snatchung tIme after school to dash In wrnte up for the yearbook For example the staff IS taught how to plan a yearbook lay out and how to draw up a dummy book both of whIch were formerly done by an advlser and the prlnter The OCIIVIIY p9fIOd helps the Talnsman staff to plan the materIal for each ISSUE and to dlscuss Ideas for new columns The French Club Math Club and other new clubs can now accomplush much more In a half year than could have been done In a year before the actIvIty perIod was Inaugurated Few people really realuze how much the few extra perIods each month provIded by actIvIty perIods mean to the clubs and OFQODIZOIIOHS of Towson Hugh School Although there are conflIcts In the schedules of actIvIty perIods there are also many advantages In the plan Some bus pupIls who hItherto had no chance to partlcIpate In school actIvItIes can now do so School tIme for meetIngs for Student Government ASSOCIGIIOD groups wnll be provIded wIthout takung pupIls out of classes for meetIngs However the plan for actIvIty perIods stull doesnt solve the problem of over partIclpatIon In actIvItIes on the part of IndIvIdual students The shortenIng o'f perIods often makes the completion of certain proyects In one perIod ImpossIble but on the whole the actIvIty perIod fIlls a gap In student lIfe whlch has long needed to be closed Although It wIll take several years to perfect the OCIIVIIY perIod sys tem we thInk that It wIll be well worth whIle waItIng for the fIne results that now seem InevItable an oIled smooth flowIng schedule wIth varnous OCIIVIIIES sponsored by Interested helpful teachers and partIcIpafed In by every pupll In the hlgh school 65 1 ' 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 I - 1 - 1 n 1 1 . . x . . 1 1 - . . . , , . The two classes have voted to make a real occasion of the debate by staging it at night and inviting friends ond parents, April 4 is the historic night. J 67 THE 1940 COMMENCEMENT Towson has never seen a commencement lske the class of l94Os It broke all records for unsqueness and orsgsnalsty ever establsshed at Towson Last year the admsnsstratson de csded to vstalsze the commencement program sn the hsgh schools throughout the county Each school was left to sts own devsces to make plans for sts own commencement The mem bers of Towson s Sensor Class under the able gusdance of Mrs Hopksns Mrs Mowll and Msss Benson the class spon sors set to work wsth a wsll Fsrst they brought out some potentsal themes blew the dust off and sat down to thsnk But those would never do Somethsng new and dsfferent must be had So at last the theme for Commencement was settled lt was Towson Trams for the Future Certosnly nothsng obsolete about that Then began the actual plannsng to form a lsvely dsfterent program for the exer csses Such a thsng had never been attempted before but slowly the sdea evolved to have a movse showsng lsfe studses and actsvstses at Towson Hsgh Two photographers were chosen from the Sensor Class tugene Bartholomee and Eleanor Sester They started shootsng smmedsately They photographed pupsls at work sn classrooms hsstory art home economscs sndustrsal arts and others They recorded the worksngs of the Student Government showsng actual sesssons of the Student and Traffsc Courts The cameramen took psc tures of the socsal actsvstses decoratsng and dancsng at the Junsor Sensor Prom the Towson Carnsval the polstscal campasgns for S C- A pressdent the student body attendsng games the cheerleaders sn actson a fsre drsll The movse closed wsth a technscolor sectson devoted to the Sensors showsng them Ieavsng the busldsng two by two Dursng the showsng of the pscture Jane Ellen Tyrse gave runnsng comments on st tellsng how Towson does trasn for the future In addstson to Jane Tyrse s talk on the movse Wsllsam Mace pr sented the welcome and Eleanor Sester delsvered the farewell address As has been the custom sn the past varsous awards prszes are presented to those who have shown excellence sn Englssh Matnematscs Latsn Commer coal work and cstszenshsp At the Commencement the followsng awards were made Ted Prsnce Memorsal Jane Tyrse Wsllsam Mace R Lousse Balls Englssh Prsze Jane Tyrse Arthur C Crommer Scholarshsp Award Eleanor Sester Martstsa Wslson Nannse Feast Commercsal Shsrley C-ent Alumns Medal Jane Ellen Tyrse Mathematscs Sabra McDorman V slIsam Mace Latsn June Thearle The hsghlsght of the commencement program of course was the presen tatson of the dsplomas ln the prevsous commencements the Sensors had always been seated on the stage Last year however they sat sn tsered rows on floor level on esther ssde of the stage Bv rows to the accompansment of mussc by the orchestra they proceeded to the stage whsch was beautsfully banked wsth palms and summer flowers The dsplomas were awarded bv Msss Balls Mr Corr and Mr Engle chasrman of the Board of Educatson Then sn the Recesssonal the Sensors fsguratsvely speaksng left Towson Hsgh School now members of the swellsng rank of alumns 68 , . . . . , . .
