ARCHBISI-IOP FRANCIS PATRICK KEOUGH Uur piritual We, the Towson Catholic 49ers, wish to congratulate Archbishop Francis P. Keough, on the continual good work he has done. Coming here last year he undertook to safe- guard the religious and moral aspects of the people of Baltimore and has succeeded in this very difficult and important work. We sincerely hope that the Archbishop will remain with us for a long time to come and will enjoy the same success that he has en- joyed thus far. Director FATHER GEORGE BOWLING To you, Father Bowling who have done such a wonderful job on piloting the junior and Senior Holy Name Societies, we send our sincerest thanks. In your first year at the Hilltop, you have endeared yourself to all the faculty and the student body. All who have had the fortune to make your acquaintance have profited greatly by your whole outlook on life and by your helpful assistance with our many problems. Here, your friendly nature has taken such prece- dence over your high calling that the respect, which we would ordinarily pay you, has been converted into real friendship. Also, your successful handling of the parish paper, "The Spotlight," is a special cause of joy to many of us. VC'e can repay your kindness in one way: by praying for you. The true "gold" of success is really the heavenly reward that God has promised to the 49'ers as they dig their way past the deceiving bronze of evil and the rocks of suffering. The trials of life could not be met without some divine guidf ance and so we, as Sodalists, have prayerfully sought the help of Our Blessed Mother. We know that she has not forsaken our plea. The Sodality Executive Board, under various heads, has worked ardently to keep fresh in our minds the importance of virtue in our search for this gold. Under their management, we Catholic youth have been moulded, trained, and forrned according to the spirit and ideals of Catholicity. And as Catholicism and Americanism walk hand in hand, we Hnd ourselves living up to the ideals of American youth. Thus have the 49'ers attained a strong devotion for Our Blessed Mother, whose guidance is so necessary for our salvaf tion. Then shall we merit the gold at the end of our "Quest for True Happiness." I6 The Executive Board, under the direction of the Prefect and Vice-Prefect, is divided into various committees of two. These are the Eucharistic Committee, which urges fre- quent reception of the Blessed Sacrament, especially on First Fridays, and the Catholic Literature Committee that spreads Gods Word by inducing the appreciation of good Catholic books. The Apostolic Committee shows the charitable spirit of the Sodality by packing and sending Red Cross packages and the like. To publicize school affairs and to set a reverent atmosphere, the Publicity Committee directs the drawing of posters and the fixing of the bulletin board. As for the school affairs themselves, the Social Com- mittee te.nds to conducting the dances, bakes, and all other events. And last, but certainly not least, since it is the main purpose of the Sodality, we have Our Ladyls Committee that cultivates the tender devotion we have for Our Blessed Mother. It is the Invest- ment into the Sodality of Our Lady. At this ceremony, they took the sodalist's vow and re- cited the "Act of Con- secration" to Our Blessed Mother. Here did they pledge themselves for- ever to the keeping of God's commandments with Mary's help. This can be done only by fol- lowing the guidance of Our Blessed Mother through the Sodality. Father Patrick F. Murray, SJ. There are trying times in a teen-ager's life, and he must re- treat occasionally to the laby- rinths of his soul where he can have a little talk with God. Then, separated from the world, he lives in direct union with God. Because of such an im- portant event in every students life, a well planned retreat and an understanding retreat master are always obtained for his spiritual benefit. This year, it was Father Pat- rick F. Murray, S. J., who em- ployed his God-given powers to lighten our youthful burdens. For three days, under his cap- able guidance, Mass was offered, Holy Communion received, rosa- ries said, stations made, and other devotional actions per- formed. Moreover, Father's con- ferences and the "question box" were important sources of con- solation. Truly, after this "little talk with God", one can honestly say that he has profited in the Divine harvest of God's love. "The King's jongleur" centers around the miraculous window in which the Blessed Virgin once appeared in appreciation of a gift. In hopes of her reappearance the Father Abbot of the monastery in which the window is found, invites three famous personages to offer gifts But when these fail, the humble jongleur offers his heart and peasant girl her dance. The window be comes illuminated and the Blessed Virgin appears to the awestruck pair and gives her blessing. She then disappears and the King's Jongleur falls dead into the Father Abbot's arms.
