The projects got their start in 1976 as a special Bicentennial Program. Ten his- tories were done that year and the same number were .done this year. The ideal of the project is to have students aware of our rich local heri- tage and be able to share what they know with the community, Mr. Printz said. Topics this year included the Brookville Hotel, near Abilene: Little Russia, in North Topeka: The Grand Opera House, now the Grand Theater, the Menninger Foundation, and three ghost towns. People covered were Bradbury Thomp- son, a top graphic artist of the United States: and Georgia Neese Gray, the first woman to be U.S. Treasurer. An event that was covered was the first automobile trip to Pike's Peak, using a Topeka- manufactured Great Smith automobile.
