efsmcin rsiuimiaig QGIGIQ etpilri-Elia Another winning season, including a team victory in the regionals, came to an abrupt halt for the lady Charg- er tennis team when it drew No. 1 seeded Shawnee Mission East as its first opponent in state competition. West lost all five opening round matches. A dominant force in city tennis, the team lost its first city meet in eight years, losing to Topeka High, but continued its four-year string of first place finishes at the Wamego invita- tional. Coach Bob Gladfelter, stressing team unity, spirit and enjoyment of the game, led the team to another winning season, the eighth in his eight years of coaching here. Qfamilaziee Deed! emilim iaefatin Coach Ed Poort, with a spirited, hard working squad, had possibly the best swimming team he had ever coached. Several swimmers and divers made it into state compe- tition. Randy Harris, '79, finished fifth in the 500-yard freestyle and sixth in the 200-yard freestyle. After a slow start, Jeff Handley, '79, bounced back and captured tenth place in state diving competition. I would consider the state meet a success, Coach Poort said. One of the disappointments was that the relay teams didn't make it to the finals. One relay team was only .8 of a point away from qualifying. Most members of the team were seniors who worked hard and deserved to go to the finals. ABOVE: ln good form, Jeff Handley, '79, fin- ishes his dive.
