Golfers Take City Meet, Place Fourth At State Led by senior letterman Doug Anderson, the Charger golf team had a successful season with the four-man team running away with the city cham- pionship, placing second in the league and regional meets, and earning fourth at the state meet. Other members of the four-man team were junior lettermen Mark Crow and Chad Cherry and first- year competitor Brian Burkhead. 7 At the city meet, Cherry and Crow each shot 74 to tie for low score, but both lost in the playoff for first medalist. Anderson shot 75 for fourth medalist and Burkhead shot 77. Their 300 total was the best in Topeka West history. The two-man team placed fifth with 177 and the B Team four-man team placed first with 350. The four-man team placed second at the regional meet to qualify for the state meet where they placed fourth. Anderson led the Chargers at state with 77- 72-149, followed by Crow with 75-75-150, Burkhead with 74-80-15-1, and Cherry with 74-86-160. West Places 4th In State For the eighth season in a row, the Topeka West boys, tennis team posted a winning record. Their mark was 52- 28, including wins over all Topeka schools except Topeka High. The Chargers placed fourth at the Sunflower League meet, third in the regional meet, and fourth at the state meet. At the regional meet, the doubles team of jeff Bakalar and Kurt Reid placed second, while the team of Elliott Cumonow and Stacy Sumpter placed sixth. In singles competition, Victor Pomeroy and Kevin Roberts each placed fifth. Bakalar and Reid qualified for the state meet, where they placed fourth and became the first medalists at the state meet for Topeka West since 1969.
