TYPIK di W West Upsets Lawrence In TIBT After the good showing against Topeka High, the Chargers played two games in which they never threatened their opponent. Seaman outre- bounded the Chargers 42-19 and easily won 76-56, while SM South smothered West's of- fense, holding Warner to two points and forcing the Chargers to shoot only 23 per cent to win 68-35. e-- - ,gm-ws is ,- 1 I 'l -iiavft In the first round of the To- peka Invitational Basketball Tournament, the winless Chargers were seeded last and paired to play first seeded Law- rence, ranked third in class 5A. The team rose to the occasion and led at halftime, 42-39, with Warner scoring half of West's total. The Chargers led 73-62 with four minutes left, but they went cold. Matt DeMarco's free throw with 43 seconds left was the only other point the Charg- ers could score, but it was enough to give the Chargers an upset victory, 74-73. Warner finished with 28 points, Peter- son 19, Mark Crow and De- Marco 10 each. In the next two rounds of the tournament, the Chargers did not fare as well. For the third time of the season, West lost to Hayden and to Topeka High. The Wildcats won, 74-49, and the Trojans topped the Charg- ers 80-68. After placing fourth in the TIBT, West faced SM West. The Chargers were cold the en- tire game, shooting only 28 per cent, but they managed to take a 36-35 lead late in third quarter when the Vikings were having a shooting slump of their own. In the fourth period SM West fi- nally started hitting, but the Chargers could not and lost 61- 48. a.!...wAW'K'f

Chargers Win Against SMNW A tough 1-2-2 defense made Highland Park take most of its first shots from the outside in West's next game, but the Scots controlled the boards and took all the second shots they needed to win 61-49. The next game turned out to be the battle for the Sunflower League cellar. In a true team effort, the Chargers downed SM Northwest 71-54. Warner scored 34, Peterson 17 and cap- tured 21 rebounds and Crow played what Swartz called a fantastic job of defense in the Chargers' second win. The next weekend, a Law- rence team got revenge on the purple and white on both Fri- day and Saturday night. On the high school level, it was Law- rence 85 Topeka West 49. The Jayhawks were not any nicer to the Wildcats. Against SM East, the Charg- ers raced to a 26-14 first quarter lead but were outscored in each of the next three periods and finally lost, 82-71. West had another fast start against Emporia, leading 41-29 at halftime and carrying a sev- en-point lead into the fourth quarter. They went cold in the final period and lost 68-65 de- spite a valiant comeback effort. Warner scored 25 points to set a new school season scoring rec- ord at 386 points, which beat Denny Payne's mark by 17. Before a small crowd in the first round of the class 4A sub- state tournament at Highland Park, the Chargers' disappoint- ing season came to an end with a 49-40 loss to the Scots. The Chargers' final season record was 2-18, the fewest wins by a varsity basketball team at West since its first year of competition, 1961-1962.
