Short And Inexperienced Chargers Stumble Through Early Contests Lacking in height and experi- ence, the Charger basketball team started the season optimis- tically but against heavy odds. junior Matt DeMarco was the tallest player at 6-4, and the Chargers' only returning letter- man, senior Kevin Smith, left the team after four games, but Head Coach Mike Swartz was hopeful, complimenting the positive attitude of his players. The team's first trial was at Hayden, the preseason favorite in the Centennial League. The Wildcats lived up to their ex- pectations and won, 78-65, de- spite junior Wayne Warner's 20 points. ln their second game, the Chargers faced a taller junction City team and lost, 61-50. Smith was leading scorer for the Chargers with 21 points. Tied at 40 with Topeka High after three quarters, the Charg- ers were outscored 32-13 in the final period to lose, 72-53. Pe- terson was high scorer for West with 17 points. Neither Highland Park nor West had won a game previous to their first match, but the Scots played tough defense in the second half and controlled the boards to win their first, 51- 41. ln a rematch, the Wildcats again lived up to their reputa- tion as the Chargers lost to Hayden 81-68. The Chargers, still looking for their first varsity win, found themselves trailing an awesome Seaman team 44-21 at halftime of their sixth contest. Unable to come back, West lost 70-47. Against SM North, Warner poured in 34 points, but the Chargers could not overcome the Indians' depth and balance of attack and lost, 77-67. After seven straight losses the Chargers finally got to play ri- val Topeka High on West's home court. After being tied at halftime, the Chargers fell be- hind in the second half but launched a fourth quarter rally that put them within a point with three seconds left. West never got the ball back, though, and lost 57-52. The Chargers had given their most balanced attack of the season with War- ner scoring 20, Peterson 18 and Lundstrom 10. X! ..-1'
