Charger Comebacks Fall Shortg Season Ends with 2-7 Record TOPEKA WEST 14 LAWRENCE 21 After being dominated for the first three quarters, the tiling.-fs, trailing 21-0. launched another comeback. Reserve quarterback Steve Mueller, who entered the game when jeff Bakalar sustained a knee injury, directed a scoring drive of 72 yards in 1:2 plays. Duane Peterson and Paul Spencer, who replaced Doug Conwell when Conwell's back was injured in the first half, did most of the running to set up Tony Starr's three-yard touch- down run. Defensive end Mark Young scored VVest's second touch- down on a 34-yard fumble re- covery. After getting the ball back, kicker Doug Anderson faked a punt and threw a 29- yard pass to j.D. Ecrement. A face mask penalty moved the ball to the Lions' 29 with 1:13 left. On the next play, however, Lawrence was more alert and Mueller's pass over the middle was intercepted to stop the Charger scoring bid. ,A r' I it a ' TOPEKA WEST7 SM EAST 26 West made its third straight comeback bid after falling to an early deficit in this tornado watch-delayed game played at Seaman's Logan Field. The Chargers, down 13-7, were driving for the tying score when a bad pitch handed the ball to East at midfield. They went on to score on that posses- sion and scored again after a bad snap from center 'made Charger punter Doug Anderson chase the ball all the way back to his own six-yard line before being tackled. TOPEKA WEST 7 SM NORTH 40 The Chargers quickly fell behind to the state's number one ranked team and could not put together a comeback in their last contest ofthe season. The only highlight for the Chargers came in the second half when Mark Young blocked a punt. West bobbled the ball until defensive tackle Bob Reece gathered it in and stormed 25 yards for the touchdown. The Chargers finally lost, 40- 7, to end a disappointing season with a 2-'T record,
