TOPEKA WEST 23 HAYDEN 0 Charger Defense Holds Haydeng Offense Dominates Topeka High Trying to get onto a winning track, second year coach Cecil Wich- ert incorporated several changes into his 1974 Topeka West Charger football team. He put the defensive unit into a stunting 6-2 forma- tion, which was designed to create blocking problems for the oppos- ing offense, and he instituted the platoon system, a policy most col- leges and professional teams use, in which a player plays either of- fense or defense, but usually not both. As a result of these changes, the defense became the strong point of the team. Most of its starters were returning lettermen. The de- fensive line was seasoned and capable, and they were supported by a hard-hitting, experienced backfield. The offense, on the other hand, had only three returning starters, all in the backfield. The offensive interior line averaged 45 pounds lighter than the huge line of the previous year. Success of the Charg- er wishbone offense seemed to depend largely on the ability of these inexperienced linemen to control the brutal Sunflower League teams that they would face. In the season opener against Hayden, the Charger defense was unyielding as West walked away with a shutout victory. Senior linebacker Randy English scored the first touch- down of the season on a 7-1-yard fumble return. Other scores came on Doug Anderson's 30- yard field goal, Pat McCoy's recovery in the end zone of a Wildcat punt blocked by Mark Young, and on fullback Duane Peterson's 44-yard run. Ander- son also added two extra points. Peterson claimed rushing hon- ors with 71 yards. TOPEKA WEST 31 TOPEKA HIGH 19 The Chargers were probably as emotionally uupl' for the Topeka High game as it was possible for them to be. That may explain why, in the midst of all the excitement, as assign- ment was missed' on the open- ing kickoff, allowing a Trojan to run the ball back for a touch- down. The runback could have caused the Chargers to give up, but it only calmed them down. West's offense, unable to move effectively against Hay- den, started rolling early by marching to the Trojan 10-yard line before a fumble ended the drive. Topeka High handed the ball right back on their own five, and three plays later, Tony Starr scampered in from the one to tie the game at 7. Topeka High scored again but the extra point was blocked. After two more Charger touch- downs, West led at halftime 21- 13. The Trojans brought the score to 21-19 after a Charger fumble on the West 32, but from then on the Chargers con- trolled the game, scoring on a six-yard run by Tony Starr and on a 22-yard field goal by An- derson to seal the game, 31-19. Starr led the Charger Wishbone attack with 86 yards in 20 carries. 166 , . x eh ' -1 - in, W, -R 1-4-fad... . 'nx'q,4-4 F5509-1 . 'i --fs s - 'H -3 gg., w,,fM m 'Ff,-4. ,ggva-3.-af, e I . With a Hayden Wildcat hanging on, senior back jeff Bakalar prepares to hand off to ning back Doug Con well.
